Default Blade mSR X Feedback

Any feedback on the new Blade mSR X. How does it fly? It doesn't have the flybar - does the software control work well? Or, should I stick with the mSR and flybar?

Thanks for any feedback!

Iwas headed out today to buy my son an MSRX as an upgrade to his MCX2 that he has mastered.

Can you elaborate on what is wrong with the MSRX?

Jackinca,

Iwent ahead and got a BNF-basic (no batteries, remote or charger) for $120 plus tax at the LHStoday.

Got it home, here are my first impressions:

1. Make sure you have the right battery. We had bought some normal E-flite 150maH batteries for use in my older MSR and his MCX2, but they are only 12c, the MSRX requires a 25C, 150 maH battery. The other 150's will work, but only for about a minute. Seems the bird is power hungry.

2. The AS3X system eliminates the need for a flybar (and flybar problems), but it DOESNOT make the heli more stable. It makes it feel more like a CPheli in that you get lots of freedom to make it go, but it requires some pilot input.

3. The piroette rate is slower than my old MSR, but that could be due to the battery mishap, or the fact that Ibound it to an LP5DSM, not a fancy transmitter like a DX6. You may be able to do much better with a high end transmitter.

Ithink my son is going to inherit my old MSRfor single rotor learning and Iwill get some good batteries and work with the MSRX.

On a side note, Ibought myself an SR120 because they were on sale. THATis a stable, low speed bird, Iwill need more batteries for that!!!

Chris,

Good details, thanks. Sad to hear though - been holding out a while waiting for the release.

Would you say it is still stable enough for indoor flight? That's my goal. I'm moving up from a cheap coaxial I love, but want more control. MSR or mSR X? Or... something else?

Jackinca,

The MSRXis small and stable enough to hover and fly around indoors. My son and Ifly inside our two car garage with 8 foot ceilings. We are still looking for a local gym or warehouse to get some real flying in. That was one of the reasons Ibought the SR120, I want to be able to fly outside in the calm winds. Ihave a Blade SRthat Ijust can't get a good feel for. The Blade SRhas such a fast head speed and is so quick to respond that it can really get away from you in a hurry and break lots of stuff when it crashes. Iknow the SRis a tamed down CP heli, but it moves too fast for me.

So, if I was you, either the older MSRor the MSRX will get you what you want. Take it slow and work on the fundamentals. If you have a little more room, Ican't say enough good things about the SR120, that thing is quiet and the head speed is slow, docile and forgiving. My son was hovering that thing in 5 minutes.

For both helis, batteries are a little hard to get right now, but they are out there.

What part of the country are you in? Iam in Kansas City, MO.

Chris

Jackinca,

The other thing I forgot to mention is that the guy at my LHS (who is a big heli guy) said that the MSRX is basically the same technology as the MCP X, just brought back to fixed pitch. So if that gives you an idea of the type of heli it is. It's big brother, the MCP X is designed for 3D with collective pitch.

Ihave better batteries on order, they are Hyperion 25C, 160 maH, we will see how they do versus the E-Flite 150 maH, 12C.

Only getting about 90 seconds of flight time out of those, the heli is power hungry.

Also, the MSR X is a little bigger and sits taller than my old MSR.

mSR is being sunset.. meaning they arent going to make it anymore.

mSRX is the new flybar-less (FBL) system using the AS3X technology.  So the mSRX performs far better in 5mph wind than the mSR.

It takes more control to fly similar to the mCP (without the 3D).
The FBL setup eliminates pendulum effect that the mSR has.

Now all this being said, I've never flown the mSR, only the mSRX.  However, I'm on Helifreak forums where the mSRX is duscussed much more.  The consensus is that it the mSRX is better than the mSR, but takes more piloting skill to fly.

Batteries - mSR used 12c LiPo and mSRX uses 25c.  Major difference to note.

I got these (somewhere in the postal system): http://www.miniaviation.com/KM_190P.html

Allright guys...here's my feedback:

I love this little heli...I got one for christmas, and like the previous posts have said...the batteries were not available through horizon hobby, so I had to use an older lipo for a different BNF, charged it on my Turnigy charger...got about 3 minutes or so, but needed the higher C rate.

So, I did some research online and found these:

http://store.batteryspecialists.com/tp1601spl25um.html

free shipping for all internet orders, 8.99 each, and INSTOCK!...lol ( I highly recommend these guys for all your battery needs!)

Anyways, after getting these batteries, it flies much better, getting about 5 mins flight time, and these lipo's can be fast-charged at .8 amps (5C) takes 12 mins.

The heli performs very well...not like a co-axial, or any other heli under a 450 class, with the exception of the mCPx...

This is not really a first-time heli, in fact it's listed as an intermediate skill level, due to it's characteristics.

It requires constant user inputs on 4 channels, I would recommend starting with expo on your radio (if you can)

The fact that it's flybarless makes it very nimble, and responsive to even the slightest inputs. Overall I am impressed with the way it flies, in my opinion way better than the original MSR .

For it's size, it is remarkably similar to flying a larger CP heli, I fly 450e size, and 50 nitro size helis.

Here is a link to me flying in my bedroom...excuse the pajama's...LOL

Thanks,

Matt

http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...dProduct=11857

not is stock as of right now...1/6/11 3:07 EST

I ordered 3 the other day to try them...$1.33 each and $2.99 shipping on orders under 100 grams, so you can get 4 shipped for just over $8...lol

Got my new batteries in the mail today from an Ebay seller out of NY, GONITROHOBBIES.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/130601790851...84.m1497.l2649

WOWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!What a difference, the head speed is faster and that little motor was screaming!!!!

Got tired of hovering around the garage and the wind was not blowing when Igot off work so Itook it out into the street. This little bird flys like a champ when given enough room! It has enough forward speed to fight a little breeze and it was zooming around great.

It does take a little more input and you have to have your reflexes and stick inputs down, but what a great small bird. Way more responsive than my old MSRand Ithought that bird was fun to fly!

Iam sold!!

So I decided after reading up on the MSRX to go and get one. I'll say this right away. AMAZING. This heli flys a MILLION times easier then my flybar MSR. I never could get the TBE effect out of the thing so I just stopped flying it and it's on CL right now. Binded the MSRX to my DX6i at first it took me a minute to find the courage to do what you really need to do to take off which is just hit the throttle firmly and watch it skyrocket into an extremely stable hover. Ya you have to input to keep it there but it's so much easier to hover and actually move it around a room. I actually have control over it and am enjoying flying it. I can definetly see how much more responsive it is but it only took me about 3 times in the air to adjust to that. Now i just need to upgrade the weak links on it. Blade grips and I'm thinking swashplate. My question that i have for someone is I know MIA has upgrades like landing skids and stuff for the MSR but would they work for the MSRX because I notice the battery sits further up front then on my MSR. Or will the gyro help that and not make a difference?

Find a gym or a large open area when the wind is calm. Give yourself a little room to recover from bad positions. It is a fun heli to fly when you get used to the controls.

Definately faster than the original MSR.

If you are running the stock RTF transmitter definitely invest in a DX6i or better. Adding expo makes it much calmer. I run 40% indoors and when i'm outside I disable it.

Got a chance to do some flying this morning...I just happened to have my heli and radio at the jobsite this morning...I showed it to my boss and asked if wanted to see it go...of course he said yes. So it was a little cool, but sunny and absolutely no wind...and I got to burn a pack on the clock!

Hey there. I just wanted to chime in if I may be of any help to you. I bought a blade 120sr and was having a little difficulty learning on it indoors just due to my lack of experience and it's size, and wanted to get something smaller to improve my orientations and flight with indoors and bought a mSRx. It really is quite hard to start out on with the stock transmitter even on the low rate. That's what I am flying with now until I get the cash to buy a DX6i. I will say that I LOVE this little heli despite my problems. I have crashed it many times and it seems the only weak point is the balls on the blade grips. If you can't find them for the mSRx you can get the ones for the mSR and they fit perfect. I broke several of them, so I opted to order the microheli cnc aluminum blade grips and head for the mSR and put them on my mSRx. Just got them today and they went on easily and work great! I also ordered some 160Mah 25C batteries by Hyperion from gonitrohobbies.com and they are great! 5 minutes of flight time and cheap! I paid $19.99 for a pack of 3. Fast shipping too. If you happen to have a Celectra 4 port charger like I bought, you can get quite a lot of flight time with this little heli to improve your skills. At least I hope that it will work for me. Good luck and happy flying!

Gmeyer,

Two thoughts:

1. The MSRX can be a handful, it is very responsive and can get a away from you quickly.

2. The stock transmitter that comes with that bird and the original MSRis junk. Iwon't tell you to run out and buy a DX6, Ican't afford one either. But, flying any of the birds with at LEAST an LP5DSM makes it a lot easier. Get a cheap neckstrap to take the strain off your hands of supporting the transmitter and it also makes it easier to make fine movements on the sticks. Since the stock transmitter does not have click adjustments on the throttle stick and the the right hand stick, you simply can't get good feedback from the transmitter when controlling that bird.

Just my .02

Chris
