Is this a bad thing?
One of the windings on my motor is really black and so is part of another one. Me and my dad think that if any of the insulation gets burned more it will short out and my helicopter will fall out of the sky. I would not want that to be my first autorotaion. Should I get a new motor? I just never have seen this before. What do you guys think?

Evdreamer,
Usually, motor windings get blackened for two reasons, bearing going bad in the motor causing binding or an over voltage condition. Also, an extreme positive pitch on the main blades, puts an overload on the motor.
As mentioned, for the cost of a motor, I sugguest to be on the safe side and get that Align.
You didn't mention what type heli, but my guess by the picture is a Belt-CP.

Yes it was a Belt CP. I was using a 11.1V battery on it with the Align 35A ESC. I only had seven degrees of pitch. Two flights before I noticed this I had five degrees of pitch and it only got a couple of inches off the ground at full throttle. I also drained the battery a little under 20%.

Evdreamer,
Tighten up the main gear back lash problem and the belt tension too. Belt tension is critical, I run mine a little tight, (half way in is way to loose) it gives much more tail authority and never had a motor problem in that configuration. The motor with the black windings, could just be a just bad production motor. Yours is the first I've heard of. Motors can go bad, even in a short time. Normally Not.

There is a little backlash on the main gear and the belt goes in halfway when I push it.

I put a piece of paper in between the main gear and pinion and pushed the motor all the way I could. I am guessing the main gear moves one degree when I hold the motor. I tried to pull the boom out farther but I couldn't, it kept slipping back in.

Evdreamer,
A little trick to get the belt tension tighter. See Pictures. I drilled a hole in my work table and use a drill bit to hold the tail section.
Then loosen the 4 screws that hold the tail boom, pull hard and hold. Then tighten the 4 screws. You could use a small nail, held in a vise. Second picture is blurry, but you'll get the idea. Without the nail thing, you'd need three hands.

With such many coils, the helicopter won't fall if one fails and I bet that the black winding is already out of work. I'd personally change the motor right away.

RE: Is this a bad thing?
Well I have been flying with the bad motor for awhile and nothing bad has happened. The tempature was under control during the winter. Now that it has been getting warmer outside so has my motor temp. Once I saw it hit a 180+ degrees I thought I should stop using the motor. Well I opened the motor up and all the magnets are burned, the bearings turned yellow, and the one winding is still pretty blue. I did a spin test on my new motor and the bad one and the bad one doesn't spin very easily. I found that the problem was I tightened the motor screws to tight which made the motor be tilted on the motor mount. Then the motor was rubbing on the frame. I need to solder some new connectors on my new motor and I should have the Belt CP up and running again.

Nick,
Thanks for the pictures something to lookout for on my Belt CP. if the motor was rubbing did that mess up you pinion/gear mesh with the motor having a slight tilt? Or since the tilt was side to side did not affect the mesh? Just inquiring minds want to know

RE: Is this a bad thing?
The tilt wasn't that bad. Maybe a 1/2-1 degree off. But it was just enough to rub on the frame. It didn't look like the pinion mesh was off. The main gear and pinion still look fine. I was thinking about using the aluminum motor mount for the carbon fiber version, but it is just a little wide. But all the holes are in the same spot. That would really make it hard for this to happen again. If I just took a file to it I could probably get it to fit.

Gee, I wish I had a Belt CP.
Michael ran out of them.
They're on a truck from China.
I guess that's why availability isn't until the 7th of next month.
Or maybe Esky is making me a special one!!
I'll bet that's it!
Mine is gonna be special!
or . . . not . . .
Sigh . . .
Here I sit. . . waiting . . . waiting . . .
Good thing my Old Falcon is nearly indestructible. Gotta fly something.
