Default 150cc electric can u run it at full on the ground

im new to giant electric .im told you can not run up this size motor on the ground it will burn up the esc.Why I bought the dulx 250 amp esc to run the rotomax 150cc motor .when I run it up on the ground everything stays nice and cool ,but the wires for my series connector get so hot that it melted the solder .now im told that's my fault because I did not use heavy enough gauge wire ....I didn't I used 12 gauge wire .the esc has 2 10 gauge wires for each side 2 for + and 2 for- .I should have known but im new to this and very stupid at this point .can anyone help me to set this up right
