Default Fliton Jumping Jack for Pattern

Hi All,

I'm looking for any advice or thoughts that you might have on how to fit out and set-up a Fliton Jumping Jack strictly for park pattern flying.
I’m nearly finished the build and I’m very happy with it so far.
I’ve always been the one to promote less is more especially when it comes to weight but this time because of the power plant I want to test it looks like I’m going to brake my own rules.
I will be powering it with the Align 400L 2400Kva with a 3.3:1 inline gearbox.
It spins an APC 9x6E prop at 7200 rpm on a 3 cell PolyQuest 1800 Li-poly.
I have just ordered the 4 cell PolyQuest 1800 Li-poly which should get it up to around 9500 ~ 9800 rpm+. That is starting to sound like .20 to .25 size power.
A bit of overkill? Please remember that I’m not interested in a hover machine, I want this to be a pure pint sized pattern plane.
I will try to weigh all the parts tonight and let you know the estimated AUW. It might be a touch over the standard JJ but not too much.
You comments and thoughts are welcome.

Well I've just weighed everything and done some maths.

AUW = 23.5 oz, a little over the 20 oz others have got.

However the wing area is around 2 sq foot so you get a wing loading of approx 12oz per sq foot, which sounds fine to me.

I also found out that the motor on full power and swinging the APC 9x6E at 7200rpm is only pulling 12.7 amps.
That would give me 8~9 min on full power, which I would probably never us.

Also something to consider is the fact that here in Auckland, New Zealand we always tend to have some wind around so a little more weight and more power will help there as well.

So far I’ve talked my self into believing it’s about right. Anyone have any comments, warnings, concerns, advice or ideas? Please. You can probably tell that I’m looking for some reassurance.

It sounds like a good set up. My only concern might be the power system. Since you only want to fly pattern and not full 3D, it might be sufficient, but I've usually seen JJ's flown with a 4200 Kv motor on 3 lipos as compared to your 2400 on 4 lipos. Granted they are usually geared around 5.3 to 6.6 and used for full 3D, but something to consider if you're unhappy with the power. You could even go with around a 3300 Kv motor on your current gearbox, but watch the amps. You'll know when you fly it. If you're happy, then don't change a thing. I've flown a couple of JJ's with the 3D set ups and it should be a great pint sized pattern ship.

The best setup I have found is with the Himax 2025/4200 at 6.6:1. In the last week I have been shipping a lot fo the new Himax external can motors for the JJ and the results have been great without all of that gear box mess. This is alink to one of the new motors.

Next for one of the nicest patern planes you shuld look at the new Quiet storm http://www.atlantahobby.com/shopexd.asp?id=5139

BTW I have shipped a lot to your fine country!

Hi Cliff

Thank you for your input.

What one of the out runner type motors would you recommend for the JJ as a pattern plane?

Can you also let me know the cost of shipping a Quiet Storm to me here in NZ?

I was hoping to get my JJ flying this weekend but Life got in the way. I will get it going over the next few nights.

Cheers, Katipo

Just an update. It’s almost ready to go apart from taping the turtle deck and cowl in place and putting the decals on.
I’ve replaced the APC 9x6E with a APC 9x7.5E purely because it clears the cowl better.
I’m getting 8300rpm on the APC 9x7.5E with the 4 cell PolyQuest 1800 pack.

If the weather on Sunday is ok then I will finally get to test fly it.

Hi Ken

Well the weather lately has been shocking; and we are supposed to be heading into our summer.
As soon as it has flown I will let you know.
Because of the weather I've been designing and building an F3Ai model. A biplane of cause, and it's come out at 7oz and with a wing loading of 2.6 oz per sqft. I should finish it tonight and I'll only put some pics and info up when it's finished. I spent some time looking at videos and pictures on rcmania.cz. It will be interesting to see if F3Ai catches on in the US or down here in NZ.
Cheers and Merry Christmas.

Hi Katipo,

7 oz.! Are you going to use a CD Rom motor? It might be the perfect choice.
Keep us informed, if you would, it sounds interesting.

Merry Christmas to you and yours, also.

Hi Ken

Yes I've got a CD-Rom motor from Aircraft-World.com in it. I have just finished it this morning and only need to get the CG sorted by mounting the battery. It's been a good learning experience and the next one will be lighter and I'll also go for a box fuse instead of the Shock cross section type. That will help keep it stiff without needing any extra and weighty stiffeners.

Cheers

Hi Katipo,

I didn't see this thread until just now but can you tell me how you achieved that transparant red colour on the lexan parts ?

Thanks,

Boo

Hi Boo

It's just the Tamiya Color Spray Lacquer for Polycarbonate PS-37 Frost Red.
I also used the PS-31 Smoke for the canopy.
The trick is to just mist it on very lightly for multiple coats with a few mins dry time between coats.
At first the red will look a bit patchy but if you take your time you will get an even finish with no runs. It takes a bit getting used to so practice with some scrap clear plastic. Sometimes the packaging from servos works well.

Good luck.

Cool, I thought you must have found a way of getting the Ritt dye method to work. Looks really good in the pix anyway, I wil have to have a go myself when I get my JJ.

The Fliton JJ is a totally awesome plane for IMAC/Pattern or 3D or to just have a blast with !! We just got Chris one for Christmas and he has benn flying the heck out of it. Has balistic power with the Himax 2025 and gearbox with a TP 2100 3 cell at about 20 oz. It is lighter and also great with 3 cel 3250. What a superb design, super crisp and precise for pattern and an awesome 3D machine with a APC 12x6 E prop. We totally love it and hope to get a Quiet Storm soon !! Keep havin FUN !! Rod & Chris in PA.[8D] PS - thanks for the tip on the PS-31 smoke paint.

Well at long long long last I test flew my Jumping Jack.
The plane its self flew very well and with a bit more setting up and trimming it will be a very nice park fly pattern ship.
The motor however I have to say I’m a little disappointed with.
The gearbox is fine and although it feels stiff, it’s relatively quiet in the air.
But the motor is just not producing the kind of power I would have expected.
I reckon I could get more power and a lighter set-up if I went to a direct drive outrunner on three cells.
Well at least it didn’t cost a lot and I’ve also got a little more info to work with.
Those little 2212/28 outrunners are pretty powerful for their size and weight.
I will let you know how I get on. Cheers

I have tryed this plane with a few motors, but one motor that realy performs nicley in the JJ is the Freestyle L from Plettenberg, on 3s Kokam 2000HD-S cells it spinns a 12x8" APCE prop, 31amps 6800rpm 330w no gerbox, no heat, the JJ is a very nice performing plane, one of the best in its sice! love it.

I finished my jumping jack at 6am on a saturday morning (pulling an all nighter) flew it on the saturday afternoon.

I was using an outrunner, can't remember which, but I could only find an apc 11x 4.5 and on a 7.2:1 gearbox it flew like a dog.

swapping to a 4.5:1 it started to get okay verticals, but I want more.

I'm thinking of going for a 10 x 6 and an 11 x 6 to see how she flies with that.

the AUW is around 30oz as I've not fitted the landing gear. I might later but for now I just pretend she has retracts

Correction...

My AUW is 681 grams, or just under 24oz flying.

With a 7.2:1 g/box and a 12x6 gws style prop, it has better vertical performance, but still not quite out of sight.

Any ideas on how to get a bit of a better performance? And also some more penetration? She's a little slow on the upwind lines !

Hi Katipo, where did you get your jumping jack from and how much (I think there is or was a guy in the Auckland area selling JJs and flubbers)
When you get the AXI 2212/28 going can you post some pictures of the motor mount.
Thanks Anthony.

Hi Wildstyle.

The local guy supplying them is www.hyperflight.co.nz
I however got it from www.Aircraft-World.com and it worked out around the same cost but you get a PolyQuest 1800 3 cell pack included.
If I were to do it again I would probably look more at the Quiet Storm for what I want.
I've moved Office and now have a great park just across the road. Some people clear their email or have a coffee first thing in the morning. I now have a fly or two. Good start to the day.

Cheers

Thanks for that I could'nt remember there name (Hyper flight). I was thinking about a JJ from Aircraft-World as they are now on special and there postal rates are very good although I came across the Fliton Prodigy on the hobby lobby site just before. I think a Prodigy will be better as it has more wing area at the same weight.
Also what prop are you running on the 2212/28?
