Jeff

Thanks for the reply.
I went looking for that video #187 and I could not find it. Anyway I see you said that your "ruddervators" do good for turing the Predator.
It seems my "ruddervators" are not that effectave. I mean I have good up and down response but as far as Rudder in the yaw axis there is next to none really.
My guess is that the rear ventral fin hanging down may be there as to help reduce yaw. On the real MQ-9 (wich is what this modle is kind of based off of) the ventral fin is has a rudder on it. On the real MQ-9 the "ruddervators" works the same as on our models but the rudder on the ventral is also mixed in too.

I will work on maybe mixing in some opposite aileron with the rudder as you say you do. As for my first flight I used mostly just aileron as the rudder seemed to not be doing anything at all. But you are right this model will do that so called "Lawn Dart" manuever if you don't fly it easy in the turns. You are right on when you say fly it very scale like.

I will post some photos of my Predator soon I'm also going to try to get some video of it flying.

Ron Grats on the madian and I know what you mean about the gentle turns I have flown alot of warbirds and yank the turns with no problems well as you said you cant do the Predator like that I also found that the rudder is not of much use but the way I like to fly dont really need them. Got in a thermo with it today shook the wings pertty good cant belive its November and temps still in the mid 70's weather should turn bad soon and I can get some honeydo's done. My son and I madianed the new GWS ME 262 today and went well nice looking plane and flys good with the stock motors that come with it.
Good luck with the Predator

Dave & Ron,

Hey, you guys are doing a great job of flying your Predators and remember that you can include some photos for the rest of us to see. Again,
the video that Greg Covey edited (he always does super videos) really shows the flying ability of the Predator, especially in the turns. If you go back to page 8, post #187 and click on the second line which states; Predator UAV Testing Video (9meg), the video will appear.

Now, Dave, I want to hear all about your Me 262 as that is going to be one of my winter projects.

Jeff I will post some pictures of my ME 262 and my Predator tomorrow. Taking them both to the field tomorrow didnt take any pictures of the ME 262 today as it was not painted yet test flew it and went well brought it home and finished it turned out really nice my son did a great job painting it he made a turn coat out of Snoopy he is the pilot. There is one big mass of wires to try and get tucked into the plane 2 motors = 4x the problems but at least if one motor goes out we have the outher one that should takes us all the way to the seine of the crash.

O.K Chaps.....Crappy weather this w/end so i might as well rip in to the Pred...all the bits have been gathered together. First little 'Hello whats this then ?' was on removing the covering from the aileron servo recesses, there appeared to be a little block of wood glued to the servo hole floor (the inside of the wing upper skin), it had the servo lead pull out passing through it, on pressing down on it, it just snapped away and went into freefall with the little cord attatched...Ah-Ha ! Now i see.

Two motors from UH, A Hacker style 20-20L & a 20-22L...think i'll put the 20-20L in it realises a bit more snot... $19 And $16 respectively

Jeff, Well not all our flight go so well mybe Baron was trying to tell us something becuse the pictures are of the plane on the flight after I took Baron home. I would have to say if you get this plane GWS ME-262 do not get it with there motors. What happened is about 5 min into the flight my Son lost power to one of the motors he was able to cut power to the outher motor and gain control but by that time he was to low and to far out at about 20 feet in the air the plane stalled and the right wing tiped and droped. Called GWS and even though the motors are 1 week old they will not replace it there warranty is only good got 3 days LOL. My Son ordered another one this time without GWS motors he is going to use E-flite motors this time. He pieced the plane back togeather and put 1 motor under the fuselage you think it will fly? We are going to try it in the next day or 2 will let you know.

Just remember to trial fit the motor cowl before you attach the motor to the firewall, as you may need to use some stand-offs to get the motor to allign properly. Also, inlarge the cowl opening to give better air flow over the ESC, assuming that you are going to mount it by the motor, as I did.
Your choice to go with the 20-20L for the extra power, was a good one and I think that you will be pleased. You can review the first few pages of this build and find many photos which may help.

Warbird-Dave,

So sorry to see the result of your Me 262 malfunction. Have you determined if it was the motor failing or an ESC issue. Or, some wiring issue?
I can not believe that GWS would not give you any courtesy with respect to your issue. Since you called GWS and got no where, how about going to their Vendor forum (RCU & RCG) and post the set of circumstances that you went thru. I think that it will do some good. That 3 day warantee thing is crazy talk! Let me know if it works.

Jeff yea I'm 100% sure it is a bad motor and not the ESC when we got it back to the table we checked and only 1 motor was working so we put the working motor to each of the esc's and it worked fine so we tryed the bad motor to eack esc and it did not work on either one. The motor was not over worked it only had 12 amps going to it at full speed and he was flying around at half throttle. I will give the vendor forum a try.

Hey Papajeff, thanks for the writeup. Definitely interested in the plane, just wondering how well a Torque 2830T/1095 would go since I happen to have one lying around. Would only add about 14 grams (Less than a half ounce) to the total weight over a Hacker A20-20L and a bit more power. Not looking for a speed demon here, but are considering mounting a camera to the nose... well that, and it would be nice if I could get away with using the hardware I have on hand

I really can not see you having a problem with the Torque motor. A little more power is good and with the extra 1/2 oz. of motor weight in the tail, you won't have to put 1/2 oz. of weight in the nose, like I did to get the CG right. The camera will be great fun, too. Be sure to let us know
how it all works out and do not hesitate to post any additional questions which may arise.

Jeff here are a few pictures of my build just about the same as yours about the only difference is the access door for the wing bolts I put a lip on the front end and used 2 earth magnets to secure it. I also had to add 1 ounce weight to the front.
Also I got no where with GWS 3 days is all they will warrantee there motors so that will be the last GWS motor I will ever buy.

Dave,

Very nice build and I really like the way you made the wing bolt access door. I am really disappointed in the GWS lack of customer service! All it would have taken is one little motor sent at no charge and they would have gotten tons of good comments out of it! I just don't get it. Hey, have you done any power system checks with a watt meter? If so, I'd be interested in the results.

By the way, have things (like the weather) calmed down a bit out in Ca. land???????

Cloud 9,

Glad to see that the build is going good. Nice metal stand-offs! Whose motor are you using and do you have any plans to go 2.4? I just gotta tell you, to me
(eventhough I am an "Old Dinosaur") it sure makes a big difference in the control and with the Spektrum AR 6100 park flyer receiver, you can fly the Predator up to a spec in the sky.......and then take your time and thermal back down. Then, you can do it all over again, NICE!!!!!!!!

Jeff, Yes I did a pretest amp and watt. With the set up I have I'm using an APC pusher prop 8x6 and on the ground at full throttle it is putting out 240 watts and drawing 20 amps I'm useing a jeti 18 amp speed controler and have not ha a problem The plane will pull less amp in the air then holding it still on the ground just guessing it probably pulling 16 - 18 amps in the air at full throttle but I only use full throttle to take off the plane flys around just fine at half throttle 20 min flights are the norm and I put 1850mah back into a 2100 mah battery. And for the weather we know its not going to last much longer but for the last 2 weeks we have had temps 65-71% and no wind to speak of it looks like Sunday a strom comming in. I work swing shift so I go flying every morning from 9am - noon We have a very nice field paved runway 40 feet wide by 400 feet long and I stiil run out of runway landing my zero that is one plane I just cant seem to get the landing down. Also I fly 100% electric air planes Most all warbirds but I have a few others After todays 5 flights I have made 665 flights this year and lost 4 airplanes. The picture is of my Lipo charging Station I rotate 20 batteries and charge 4 at a time all through a smart balancer and I get on avarage 3 seasons out of each battery. As you can see in the second picture all batteries are charged in a locked brinks box I have never had a battery fire but play it safe just the same.

...PJ..

Was going to run a 2.4GHz R/C setup and i realy wanted to run a 2.4GHz vid camera ....but with this you are quite likely to see some form of inteference on the video as the control system lands on a channel in the band used by the video. You are also likely to get intermittent lockouts on the control system for the same reason. From what i can remember the 2.4 GHz band is divided into 80 R/C control channels. It is also divided into 4 analogue video channels so each video channel clashes with 20 of the R/C control channels plus anything else that uses part or all of the 2.4GHz free-for-all band. The reason for the 20:1 ratio is the bandwidth needed for the data - there is a lot more data in a frame of video than a frame of R/C data.

Interference on the vid you can live with but lockouts on the R/C...a bit more problematic.

35 MHz R/C & 2.4 vid should not present this problem ...famous last words.. we will see..

Motor was this fellow..

Hello Jeff, Well not all was lost with the GWS ME 262 Warrantee on there motors suck but there planes fly even after a total crash a little epoxy and a motor move and up it went flew it 4 times today and all 4 flights were good. My son was flying the ME 262 and I Had my P-47 E-flight up and only way I could get away from him was to climb stright up and I would leave him behind then I could turn and dive up behind him. We now call the ME 262 Frankenstein. Picture 1 is the before and picture 2 is after.

Please forgive my ignorance of electric RC. I used to be a an f-18 mech in the Navy and I am stumped on this plane! I used to watch them take off at China Lake and am fascinated. Ugh! anyways I have been lurking for about a month now slowly building.... and I hit a roadblock.

I am to the point of electrical work. I got the berg 7P (same as papajeff), and I am having issues. I am trying to use a 6 channel transmitter that went with an exceed helo. The freq/channels are the same in the receiver and transmitter... but I get the solid red on the berg. I did everything on their site such as 4 ft above deck and more than a foot away to no avail.

My question is that do I need a new transmitter? The Xceed is *****in' in the sense it has alot of channels for future upgrades etc... and it is cheap but may do the job Plus I have been selling crap on ebay just to do this project as I am now a starving artist.

Thanks in advance for the help.

-Ryan

P.S. Awesome job on all predators I have seen here.

Hi,
I am beginner to planes. I have no experiance of flying. Is predator RQ-1B will be the right one to start with? Any suggestions will be appreciated.
