Well, going to try out my repaired Spektrum DX7 and updated firmware AR7000 receiver!!!

I could not believe it but the Radio System arrived today, one day earlier!

It has been recovered from the front door steps and inside the safety of the house!

I also received my new ZAGI parts from Trick RC in another box as well.

Horizon Hobby is top notch in customer service and technical support!!!

Flying the TAR out of my new Mustang!!!!

This week we are finally having some of the nicest weather conditions and starting Tuesday morning and late evening I have been flying my new Mustang by World Models for countless flights.

I believe that the model has surpassed 50 Flights and still going strong and without any issues or problems. The E-Flite Pro 40 AMP with switch mode BEC onboard and that E-Flite 480 (1020Kv) has performed flawlessly, not bad for a motor that was bought "Used" on eBay!!!

Weather (Wind) Conditions were perfect and was able to command this model to perform the best 1/2 rolls coming out from a loop, and yes completed loops as large as I wanted, nice and super SLOW SCALE Rolls, hammer heads and inverted flight with grace and light wing loading manners.

Retracts with the Servo Rate Reducer is still providing very good service with SCALE up and down looks for retract operations and landings have not been any issue.

Been able to fly her for a little over 7 minutes each flight and those Generic 3-Cell, 2200mAH, 20C, Li-POLYs measure an average of 11.5 Volts after each flight.

Just a fantastic model and setup.

Guys,

I hope you all are having a nice week as I am enjoying terrific weather conditions here in Central Florida and today was rather warm as the morning progressed into late morning.

Flew again, my World Models P-51D Mustang "EP" 49 inch wing span for two wonderful flights. The first one was for myself and after 8 minutes tooling around performing scale flying it landed very well and just slightly nose over but, it bounced back on all her mains and tail wheel after the stop.

The second flight was for an RC Club member that we have not seen for a while and fell in Love with my Mustang and asked me to fly her again and everyone was satisfied including myself as I landed her with wings level, not touching Up elevator and with just a slight power setting (perhaps nothing over 1/5 throttle) she rolled for a great landing run-out without nosing over "or" even a hint of nosing over! I was able to even taxi her to the Pilots station!!!

Just a great morning!

Guapo, I got one and will be adding sound. I will be posting some pics as I go. I will not start it until Feb, but will be doing a Benedini micro sound system with a 3" speaker. Guns included!

Great! See I can do this type of addition to my Mustang as it is one full pound lighter than the recommended setup and I would be able to carry a sound system to make it be much more realistic!

I do realize you are not starting anytime soon with the Sound project but, can you please provide links to where I can obtain the parts?

Carlos, here is the link. I think the micro system works the best. I run the sound from the flight battery consuming about 200-400 mah per flight. I am using a 3" speaker on a 25-size zero, but will go with a 4" or 5" speaker, or two 3" speakers, depending on where they will fit in the cowl or fuse for the Mustang.

Work out the weight and balance of your speakers before installation to make sure you can balance the plane.

How much throttle were you using during this flight? how long does the flight last?

Ed,

Due to good stiff wind but, steady and perhaps nothing over 9 MPH Steady I flew her at two clicks above 1/2 Throttle.

Typical flight times are 7 minutes and the generic 3-Cell, 2200mAH, 20C, Li-POLYs measure 11.5 Volts after the flight.

I fly conservative and land the model so, I have ample power in case I need to bring her around for another pass attempt to land.

RE: Smooth Hard Surface Operations!!

Just came back from a two flight sortie with my World Models P-51D Mustang "EP" at the local Middle School here in Orlando, Florida with a large 440 Oval Track.

The model took off and landed on her mains with that smooth manners like the large Full size model. Nope, she did not bounce at all as I made sure that the model kissed the smooth hard paved track.

I noticed during an attempt to taxi back that the mains have a lot of slop and had to stop the model and walk over to pick her up and this proves my theory that these retracts will not hold close to 4lbs. as the advertised fully flight ready weight using those 4-cell li-polys.

Fortunately, the retracts tracked well on landing speed and the model did not exhibit to veer off course "or" ground loop. It may be possible that I might need to return the STOCK super light "FOAM" Wheels that came with the model for smooth hard surface.

I will try it out another day and report back.

RETRACT ISSUE!


The Slop that I am talking about is forward and backwards motion of the retract strut when it is in the DOWN position.

Furthermore, this morning (Super Blue sky morning with DEAD Calm conditions) I flew my Mustang for a 7 minute flight and I noticed that during take-off and activation for GEAR-UP the retracts stayed down and had about another 2-degree of travel left to go. I just placed the model in a inverted flying position and the main gear struts finally went inside the wing assembly wheel wells.

The activation for GEAR-DOWN went fine but, once it landed the Right main gear strut folded, fortunately the model was almost to a complete stop and NO DAMAGE!

On closer inspection after taking the model to the Club's Table, I noticed that the retract servo (Hitec HS-85BB) slightly moved during activation for GEAR-UP and GEAR-DOWN. It appears that the securing screws holding down the retract servo are not tight. Easy fix but, I have to take off the wing assembly from the FUSE.

Okay,

Took off the Battery hatch off and with a small philips Screw driver, I went ahead and tightened those two securing "Hold Down" screws on the Retract Hitec HS-85BB servo on my World Models P-51D "EP 40" Mustang and before flying her early this morning, I activated the retracts and they all worked flawlessly. I did not need to take off the wing assembly!!!
The reason they got lose was because I used those tiny square Rubber isolators and with the vibration and hard landings they did their job!!

So, took the model over to the local Middle School with a large Oval 440 Track and she lifted of like a home sick Dove Flew the model for about 7 minutes and landed her on the soft grass in the middle of the Oval Track and she kissed the blades and did not nose over!!! Perfect landing.

Hey, what you guys think of my replacing the Pilot of my World Models P-51D Mustang with one that comes with my PARK ZONE F4U Corsair? It looks to me that the pilot in the Corsair looks pretty good for the Mustang, what you guys think?

World models make nice planes..... but their pilots need a bit more attention , I think They use the same 2 or 3 pilot figures in all their planes, they are nice and light and with a bit of paint and some time you could make one look a lot better. -Reuben

Sunday morning (January 4th, 2009) flying fest!!!


Guys!

It was a marthon of sorts, got to the RC CLub sort of late and first flight was around at 11:00am with winds of 9 MPH with changing direction.

Both the WM Mustang and my Large Citabria had a little landing mishap and none of the models were damaged. The WM Mustang once again had one of it's main (Right Side) retract fold on final and almost to a complete stop. I noticed that the Retract servo was slightly loose and all I needed was to tighten the servo securing screws "and" perform a TRAVEL ADJUSTMENT so, the LOCK could be reached once the main gear was activated to DOWN. The 3rd Flight allowed to verify this and the model came in fast with good airspeed and the main retract gear held solid and the model did not nose over.

There was one RC Club member that was there next to me and co-celebrated my success with almost 4 flights with the Mustang!

I have attached pictures of my largest RC Airplane model that I own and fly.

I will be using the Hangar 9 US WWII Pilot. I think the correct scale is 1/9. Just finished a Hyperion Ki-84 with a H9 pilot at 1/10 scale. It looks nice. I will post a pic. I think the pilot really makes the model "come alive."

I was just looking around for my next project and found this instruction sheet from Hobby-Lobby on this nice Ducted Fan Jet!!!

I believe that the World Models instructions is missing many setup instructions and retracts is one of them!!!

For those that have not dealt with retracts before like myself then, I feel one can follow these instructions as they are some general guidelines when setting up retracts for the first time on any model.

I just ordered a Pair for my Beloved and Grounded Mustang due to the rather weak Strut Wires that come with this model.

I am really excited to come across this deal since these Electric Retracts is just what the Doctor ordered for a Long Time!

I had not flown my Beloved TWM Mustang for over one solid year and you can see for yourselves that on Thursday, (12-26-2013), she came with me to the RC Club and flew majestically and most especially graceful. My model is super LIGHT using the E-Flite 480 (1020Kv) and 3-Cell, 2200mAH, Lithium Polymers with the Hitec Receiver (FM) and my JR XP-7202 FM transmitter.

Yes, it has been almost 13 years but, I still have my beloved World Models P-51D 40 EP and it still is a delight to fly it.
Okay guys.....

After some additional tinkering around with the mechanical retracts, I gave up and decided on E-Flite 15-25 size E-Flite Retracts. The E-Flite Retracts were bought from eBay a few years ago and finally took the initiative to change them out on this World Models P-51D 40 Mustang.

A few things to keep in mind and items you will need for this modification:

1. Dust mask and Safety Glasses, no kidding please wear a pair.
2. You will need heavy duty wire cutters.to cut the ends of stock slightly bent wire struts.
3. Dremel tool on the lowest speed setting, in case your Dremel accidently touches the covering.
4. Using Dremel - sand away both sides of stock attaching mechanical retract plywood rails and square off opening of retract cavity.
5. Fit check the E-Flite 15-25 retracts and repeat step 4 as required.
6. Feed in a 6-inch or 12-inch servo extension and connect to E-Flite 15-25 retract.
7. Once the E-Flite 15-25 retract stays flush on the wing opening cavity, check for function and see if retract wire enters the cavity.
8. If not, repeat Step 4 as required.
9. Use a drill with the appropriate size (depending size wood screw) and drill holes for securing E-Flite 15-25 retracts.
10. Repeat Step 7 before screwing in anything yet.
11. Using Dremel tool, dermal a FLAT Spot on the stock strut wire so, it will not rotate and provide a secure fit when tightening set-screw.
12. Once you are sure all is functioning okay, use appropriate screws and using a small screw driver, screw in the wood screws slowly.
13. Clean area as required with a clean dust rage or clean paper towel.

In Step 6, I used a typical 12-inch servo cord extension and worked really well when using a dental floss tied at the male end with a tiny nut and using gravity the nut goes in the mid-section of wing and goes down the ribs until it reaches the Servo Cavity.

Again, Please use eye protection and dust mask as this modification has induced hazards from flying (ballistic metal) when cutting stock strut wire end and use a dust mask when sanding plywood with high speed Dremel tool. Please stay safe!
