Anybody electrify the Sig/Herr Little Extra?[sm=confused.gif] I got one; don't know yet, wet or volts.[&o]

hmm, good question! not sure myself i do know of a fellow that you know that might be able to lend some advice, check with johnny in san diego, he's a big sparky fan like me but im still kinda shallow in the scene. how bout that mini g-b kit, sold?

The October 2005 issue of !QUOT!Fly RC!QUOT! magazine has an article on the Lil Somethin Extra. It covers both fuel an electric versions of this aircraft. The electric version appears to be an excellent flyer using an AXI 2220/12 out-runner. MotoCalc numbers look great with the AON T2815 and Himaxx 2815/2825 motors. An outrunner will save the need for a geared motor, but may be a bit more difficult conversion. Sig/Herr is now shipping the ARF with electric conversion instructions based on the Himaxx HB2815.

I am in the process of convincing the wife that Lil Somethin Extra is an absolutely essential item. Looks like she is slowly buying to the cute little plane that looks just like the 40 sized I built for our son.

I use a Hacker A 2020L with great results. 3 cell He-Cell 2100mah Li-Po battery !

Bought the Backyard Flier mag and found the following info in the Herr advertisment, There was no article on it in my issue. But this info was there now wondering if anyone has the instructions that come in the box with the new Lil something extra arf.

• 1 each Maxx Products Himax HB2815-1400 Brushless Motor ("In-runner" type) (or similar. like a mega 16/15/6)
• 1 each Maxx Products Clam Shell Motor Mount #ACC314
• 1 each 25 amp Brusless ESC (we used the Phoenix 25 progamable unit)
• 1 each APC 8 X 4E Thin Electric Propeller #LP0804E
• 1 each LiPoly Battery Pack, 3S, 11.1v, 1500maH - 2100maH

This is a can brushless or inner runner motor but no gear box is required. I run the Mega 16/15/6 with a 8X6
apc prop. on a Kadet EP42 and it hauls.

Go to Sig's site and email them regarding the instructions for the electric conversion (Sig is the owner of Herr Engineering). I recieved them in less than hour. The Sig conversion instructions are based on removing the wing to swap batteries. I went further and made a removable hatch for quick battery changes. Mine is powered with a direct drive Warp4 BL4-1430 using an 8x6 APC-E prop on a 3S2100 LiPo. Watt meter indicates 200 watts input +/-. Hopefully I will put the maiden flight in this weekend.[:o]

Would one of those multiplex brushless 480 motors work? Seems like a good match for vertical performance:eek:

Been a long time since this thread was active so gotta get the memory in gear. The Little something extra is still flying. Not sure if the Multiplex 480 would be big enough. It would probably work but be a little under powered.
My Final conversion
AXI 2808/24 outrunner brushless motor + Jeti 30 Amp controller
APC 9X6 propeller
Thunder power TP2100 Mah 11.5 lipo. (fits nicely in the forward part of the fuselage. No Battery hatch but it isn't to bad)

This combination turned out to be fantastic.
Hitec Electron 6 receiver
With the battery up against the firewall and using Hitec 55s the CG was right on.
.
The plane does a great knife edge and is extremely stable in the air. Flight times are 10 to 15 min depending on power use.

I prefer that outrunner brushless motors for direct drive as I find they vibrate less although I do have inrunners with direct drive and am pleased with them also.

what would be the best way to mount a outrunner motor in the little extra? Did you have vertical performance with that setup of yours?

Are hs-55 servos good for this plane?

The HS-55 servos are what I have in my Little Extra and work well. Can not say how the parts you mentioned would work although the motor I might think was a little small due to its amp draw of only 12 amps. Mine I think uses about 19 amps. Be carefully with the battery you use as the Thunder power listed just barely fits into the compartment behind the motor. Some of the other battery's are a little bigger and won't fit.
The outrunner brushless is easy to mount using the rear mount set up that is available. Don't bolt it to the rear bulkhead just cut out a slot in the existing motor mounts to allow the brushless to clear. I epoxied motor mounts 90 degrees to the side panels. Using only three of the mounting lugs is fine, will try tomorrow to get some pictures posted.
Vertical performance is good with this set up

Just picked one of these up myself. Still haven't decided on a power setup. I'm new to electrics and got a good deal on this plane from the LHS.

Hi mrbigg,
I too just picked one up, still in the box. A buddy has one and it looked great, he has the Himax motor but I'm not locked in to it. I will slowly gather parts as I have other projects going. Maybe we can resurrect this tread as it is a great looking plane and the price is right.

I just ordered a motor and speed control from Tower. I had $35.00 coupon code so I went with their motor. I got the Rimfire 35-30-1450 and a 35A Brushless ESC. I also orderd 5 different APC props, 9x6, 9x7.5, 10x5, 10x7, and 11x5.5 in their electric series. I also picked up a Watt's Up watt meter.

Let us know how those props clear the ground as the gear seems a little low.

A friend gave me one of the recommended Himaxx motors and I had the clam shell mount so I will be going the inrunner route, at least at first. A common problem is bending the inrunner shaft on a nose over.
Looks like you will be in the air before me, good luck and keep us informed.

Change of plans. I busted up my Parkzone Corsair so I ripped the power system out of that to put in the extra. I had to cut out the wooden engine mount. I used a dremel with a drywall cutting bit. I'm halfway done assembling it. I'll get some pics up by tomorrow.

Didn't feel like doing any work on it today. Took some pics though. I had to add a piece of ply under the two top motor mounts for some down thrust. I still have to pull the motor back off to finish sand the motor compartment. I have to make a battery tray next. I cut quite a big hole in the bottom of the fuse behind the firewall. Still have more to cut out. The prop that's on there is 9.5" and looks to me like the max. That is the Corsairs prop and I'll use that for the test flights and then switch to an APC 9x6.

Looks like mine only smaller..LOL!! Thats my little plane cleaner.. She does a great job too.......
