Default help with battery selection??

I am looking to build a 59 inch wing span sport plane, the Edge 540 46 ARF to be exact.
I am going with electric power and have chosen the Turnigy 50-55A 400kv outrunner motor.
The plane should weight around 6 pounds ready to fly. I think I have chosen the correct motor and will be running a 80a ESC with it. The motor specs say to run a 14x9 prop and a 4 cell lipo. I am completely lost as far as what battery to run?? What volt 14.8? I know it needs to be four cell but what volt and what mah as well as what "c" value?? Like a 2200mah 14.8v 4cell 30c?? I get completely lost on the specs of the battery and what they mean/do??? Help if you can. Any input on my motor selection, or ESC, or prop, or battery would be greatly appriciated!!

Thanks for your help.

Welcome to RCU.

A 4 cell lipo by definition is (3.7 x 4 =) 14.8 volts.

sorry , I can't help with specific capacity or C ratings because I don't know anything about planes. The "mah" is the capacity (think amount of fuel in the tank) and would determine the runtime. The C rating determines the pack's capability to discharge at a fast rate (think gallons per minute) The higher the rating , he faster it can be safely emptied.

Well looking at this online calc program

http://www.s4a.ch/eflight/motorcalc_e.htm

I do not see the 50-55A listed, they do list a 50-55B?

I put TR50-55-08 (400kv) motor in, 60 amp ESC, 20c to 30c battery at 5000mah APC "E" prop, 18X8 and I get 110.5 ounces (6.9 pounds) of thrust at 35.75 amps.

You list the plane at 6 pounds, that is 96 ounces, so you have just a little over 1 to 1 power to weight. Now if I up the cell count to a 5s, the thrust goes up to 160 ounces (10 pounds) at 51 amps.

I ran the 5055B motor and this is what I got.

4s, 5000mah battery, 14X9 APC prop 60 amp ESC it shows 65.8 ounces of thrust and only 18 amps. If I go up to a 5s battery it show 96 ounces of thrust and 26 amps.

Is this the motor you are looking at?

http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/s...idProduct=2102

If it is, the reviews use a 5s or a 6s battery not a 4s. That is they use a 18.5 volt battery or a 22.2 volt battery.

Also, this is what the manufacture says to use.

"Use this motor with 4-6 cell Li-Poly packs and 13-14 inch props on planes up to 7 lbs flying weight.
Manufacturer suggests a 13 x 8 prop on 6 cells or 14 x 9 on 4 cells. "

I am FAR from knowing a lot about this. I have read a lot about planes that are the same size and type to figure out what I was doing. It took me a long time to figure out my setup. There are many ways to setup up your plane. There is no perfect setup either.

I have a similar plane, it s a Giles 202 46 sized. The size and weight should be close to the Edge you are looking at.

I have a 25c, 5000mah battery, 60 amp ESC, Monster power 46 motor, APC 13X6.5 prop. It fly's very well with this power setup. It is not a 3D demon, yet it has a 10 foot take off roll into a vertical climb as far as I want.

Keep the question coming. There is a lot to learn with the "E" power setups.

Default RE: help with battery selection??

Thanks so much Buzz!!! Awesome info here.
This will go a long way in helping me to understand what it is I'm putting together. The link to the motor you put in ISthe motor I am looking at. How does this motorcompair to your MonsterPower 46?? So If I'm reading your info correctly, if I use the listed motor, with a 60A ESC, 5s battery (say 25c 5000mah), and around a13x7 prop I should have amoderate powered machine capable of vertical climb, but not recessarily a 3D monster??

That would be exactly what I'm after,,,I want to be able to hover, at least for a little while, and have enough power to get me out of trouble, if needed.

This is your setup below.... I am assuming it is a 5s battery pack?? And is your plane in the 6lb range?
