Default Pre-Cooling of Nicads Harmful?

Hi all,

To prevent motor nicads in an e-glider from overheating during long climbouts, I pre-cooled the pack (after charging) down to about 50F, then installed it into the plane and launched.

It worked well - The peak temperature of the pack, as expected, was much lower than normal (as indicated by temperature-recording labels), and there was no observable reduction of power.

I want to make sure that pre-cooling won't be damaging to the pack, now or long-term - Can anyone comment on what effect pre-cooling has on:
a) available amperage
b) available voltage
c) run time (capacity)
d) pack lifetime

Any comments appreciated

What I can tell you is that power and duration suffer when a pack gets really cold, on the order of 32F or below. As soon as the pack warms back up, though, the power and duration come right back.

50F is nothing. People fly in 50F weather all the time. The batteries have to be at ambient temperature somewhere along the line.

You may also want to consider ventilation through your battery/electrics compartment. It's always a good to have some air to help cool your ESC and battery during flight.
