What Bi-plane to get?
I have flown my trainer 60 for some time now, but I wated to get an electric biplane that I could fly in town instead of 10 miles out of town. I was wondering if you could make any suggestions about what to get. My budget is around $250. I already have an extra tx and rx and standard servos.

If they're anything like the Extra, CAP, and Giles in that same series of planes, they are heavy and underpowered using the recommended power setup. You will not be satisfied with their performance, and to outfit them with LiPo cells and brushless motors... Well, let's just say that it will blow your budget out of the water.

I have an GWS Tiger moth. It's cheap and light and can easly fly in a backyard.
But I feel that your looking for something a little more expensive if $250 is your budget as I think the kit is about $45. Anyway there's no harm in looking. They also are about to release a PT-51 which has a much bigger power system.
The Tiger Moth is great to fly and is a hastle free plane in my experiance. and with a 2S lipo battery will stay up for a good 20 mins.

Ah yes, the GWS PT-17 Stearman is on the Horizon, pardon the pun. Thanks for reminding me.
Full-size gear in a Tiger Moth will be awfully heavy, though the correct gear, including speed control and battery, only costs about $85.

Another biplane that's overlooked is HL's Fatty Sparrow. I've had my eye on one for months. I searched all over and didn't read any bad reports, so I ordered one last Friday. It's sorta like a Tiger Moth... on steroids. It's got a 350 in it, weights about 16 ozs, balsa reinforced fuselage, but only has a top speed of 15 mph. Should handle 5 mph winds with no problem. Apparently it's got a lot of thrust- I was reading somewhere where they were using it as a tow plane!

RE: What Bi-plane to get?
My dad has a Fatty Sparrow and loves it. Also look at

The Wattage Super Cobalt is a good motor for most of these (The Fatty uses the Sim Prop Acro drive 350 ) but you can also upgrade to a small Astroflight 010 or even the 020 if you want over kill.

RE: What Bi-plane to get?
I'll throw in a vote for the Tiger Moth- I was my first GWS parkflyer and still good. But mainly I wanted to say DO NOT get a Graupner Sunwheel. It's pretty, but much more trouble than it's worth to get to fly, and fragile to boot.

I agree with desertrc - The SR Bantam Bipe is brilliant. The kit could not be better - it's laser cut and comes with very clear instructions, and flies like a dream.
