Comet Taylorcraft conversion "FINISHED"
I have a 54" span Comet Taylorcraft that I built about 30 years ago that I am in the process of converting to electric. With receiver and servos installed, but no covering, it weighs 8 oz, a bit of which is due to the fiberglass job I did on the cowl to try to hold this thing together. I am wondering what would be the best motor for this thing. I expect the ready to fly weight to be less than 16 oz, which will give me about a 6oz/sqft loading. As it was originally rubber powered, and the airframe is very light, I don't want to overpower it, just want it to cruise nicely for 5-10 min.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I had an Aeronca Cheif some time ago - on a geared speed 400 system and 6 cells it was a nice floaty cruiser, and still had decent climb power as well.
I'd look into one of the GWS "C" or "D" motor/gear drive units, and preferably LiPo batts for it.
Have fun!
(I wish they still made those kits.....sigh)

Hey g8tor,
Nice job, really looks good. I wish they still sold those kits, I loved the way they just seem to float. Built two of them many years ago. Hope you get many enjoyable flights.

Thanks, got a half a dozen flights so far, "float" is the key word here. It doesn't take much wind to push it around. Will try to get some in-flight pics one of these days.

Ah - one of the projects I never finished. It would be so much easier to do with today's motors, batteries and radio gear than it was when I was trying to do one.
I did build a 1/6 scale 1946 Taylorcraft in 1989, powered by an Astro 40G, though..... took second in R/C Sport Scale at the NATS with it.
Love the T-Craft!

RE: Comet Taylorcraft conversion Flying pics
Had a beautiful day to fly Saturday, got a friend to take some pics. Got a 10 min flight with enough altitude to catch some rising air.

Nicely Done! Beautiful plane!
When I was a kid we lived near a small airport and I remember how pretty the Taylorcraft and Stinson planes looked sitting on the field. It's neat to see that you put one back into the air...sure, it's smaller...but with the same style and grace of the full size planes.
Thanks for the pics...and the memories...

Thanks for the comments. It's getting to be more fun every time I fly it. Hard to believe, with all the stuff I have in it now, that it started off as a $2 box of sticks and tissue, and then hung in my office for 20 years.
