RE: What is wrong with Foamies?
I belong to AMA, I belong to a club, and fly foamies exclusively. I have no desire to build anything from scratch. I may try a balsa ARFone day, but for now, foamies are just fine.

RE: What is wrong with Foamies?
I have been building, flying, crashing, repairing and losing toy airplanes on and off for sixty-some years. It's only very recently I got a couple foamies - an Airfoilz full fuse Edge 540 I built from a kit, and a pnp Hellcat by Tower. The Edge flies splendidly. Haven't flown the Hellcat yet but I can see no reason it won't fly well. My only complaint is that they take a hangar rash real well just from normal handling in an airplane cradle during the course of setting up the electronics. The Edge dents real easy and the paint on the Hellcat is way fragile.

If you like to scratch build foamys is the way to go. You can experiment with new designs etc, and if they don't work, you don't have a lot of time or cost invested. Here are a few of my crude creations.

That just depends on the electric. My 8 pound Goldberg Chipmunk did just fine:-))))))))))

Was that made ofEPPor Depron foam? ;-) I know, we had shifted to electrics by then. My latest electric is scale (G-44 Widgeon)and has a fiberglass fuselage and nacelles, twin engines, tapered wings,28oz/ft2 wing loadingand skoots right along without much regard to wind . . . for five minutes or so. That's 40%more wing loading per sq.ft than my 43cc Ultimate Bipe and 20%more than my 34cc Super Sportster! It's like throwing a rock.
Ionly have one "foamie" (and few electrics) and the foam jet does suffer from the wind. Has plenty of power to cut into it, but when throttling down it's just a dandylion seed in the breeze and balloons terribly.
Ilike electrics, Ilike foam, Ilike glow, Ireally like gasoline. All have their place and all are fun. My next model will likely be a foam electric for use in a newly planted acre field Inow have. Yippee! Provided the sheep don't freak out too much. ;-)
But here's a thought: if it was big enough to carry you would you rather be in foam, stick and tissue or carbon fiber &poly resin?
