Need Electric Motor and ESC Recommendations For 30" Herr Piper Cub
We are building a 30" Herr rubber powered Piper Cub and want to power it with electric. Any suggestions as to the correct motor and esc for this project? I would like a motor that will power planes a bit bigger also. Just getting into electric, but, we are still flying glow and will continue as we love it. Please let me know the gear such as brand and size. Has anybody flown one of these Cubs with electric? It seems as though it should be a good flyer with electric. Any suggestion will be greatly appreciated. I see that HobbyKing has a large selection of elec. gear. Thanks.

This (or the 1500Kv version) would be fine with a 3s and an 8x4 GWS HD prop. http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...arch=2730-1300
This ESC: http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...arehouse_.html
And a 3s ~1000mAh LIPO battery (+ a suitable charger)

Looks like 2S is the general consensus for powering that plane. Some guys are running the bigger plane on 3S. The 1000mah battery might work, the 2100 likely to be heavy.

Need suggestions on another set up. We are building a couple of walnut scale (15 to 17 inch ws.) planes. Especially the Dumas Beech Staggerwing. We also have a couple of other bipes in the 17 1/2 inch range. Need advice on a motor and esc for these. Doc.....I did order the Hobbyking motor and esc that you recommended. Sure would appreciate some advice on this. I do like Hobbykings range of motors and esc's. Is there a motor for this that would use the same ESC or should I order a seperate ESC? The esc you recommended is a Turnigy Plush 12 amp(2ABEC). I am assuming that a smaller esc would be in order for these really light planes. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Assuming you won't be drawing more than 3-4A on 2s, this 6g model should be good. http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...ontroller.html
What size props would suit your tiny planes? decide on that, then you can choose a motor with the correct Kv for it.
Something like this: http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...00kv_14g_.html, might suit. I haven't tested that particular motor but a similar 14g Suppo 1510 (~2230Kv) ran well with 5" props on 2s.

I am using GWS 8/4 props on the Cub as per your recommendation. What prop would you use on the small motor for the 17 1/2 inch Beech Staggerwing? I think your advice for the motor and esc for the Staggerwing are right on. I am learning electric by asking questions. Doc....you and the other fellows on the board are very valuable and I very much appreciate it. Thanks to all. Also...the Hobbyking order arrived in 3 days. Very impressive.

Herr E-Cub
Hi Steve,
You mean this Herr Cub. I built it from a partial Herr kit 2 yrs. ago. It flies super realistic, certainly not overpowered. Will have to get back to you with particulars.
I also did a Sterling Rubber Power Tiger Moth bipe. But the Comet 54" Taylorcraft is my favorite.
Will join you later.

How about a picture and info of the motor compartment. Our Turnigy has a hub to go over the shaft for a bigger prop hole, but, it shortens the shaft in relation to the cowl. Looks as though we will have to move the firewall forward for the prop to clear the cowl. Any suggestions? I guess I could enlarge the shaft with a piece of copper tubing. Any other way to get the fit correctly?? Thanks.
