Cobalt 480 prop selection
I recently purchased a 480 cobalt motor for a high-wing aerobatic trainer with a 38 inch wingspan and flying weight of less than 30oz. I have a gear reduction with pinions for 2:1 or 2.5:1. I'm seeking advise on prop selection for direct drive, or with the gearbox.

Do you have a specification for the motor or at least what make it is or where it came from. I don't think I've ever seen or heard of a cobalt 480. Plenty of 400s but no 480s.

Cobalt 480 prop selection
I purchased this motor from Dymond Modelsport (www.rc-dymond.com). I don't think it's much different from a 400, but the spec. sheet that came with it said it was a 480. It's 13 turn motor for 7-8 cells. The spec sheet says that with a 7*3 prop, RPM's are 16,600, current is 21 amps, and power is 176 watts. The lable on the motor says "Irvine cobalt motor." Thanks for the reply, Steve.

Irvine Cobalts
I have a couple of the Irvine cobalt’s. They come in 14,13,12 and 11 Turn I believe they are the same as Promax cobalt’s. I had a pair of 13 turns on my Twinjet but I did not install the diodes and lost it due to interference. They are bad about RF in pairs due to the high amp draw.
I have run 6x5, 7x3,7x4 8x4 and 8x5 and all performed well to an extent. If you are going to run 8" props for fun fly type aerobatics I would recommend 7 cells. This combo works well. For speed I would prop down to 6x5 or 6x4 and jump up to 10 cells. They scream on 10 cells.
