Flew the Slow Stick today
Hi everybody,
My son & I went to our local park & flew our new stick for the first time. We had the best time! I think I might need to get a few more batteries! Things started a little slow - I mean I bent the prop shaft on my first take off attempt, but I straightened it out with a pair of pliers. Then we had to fish it out of an oak tree when a gust of wind came up [at least my boy believed me!] Our first landing attempts had us back at the hobby shop buying a fist full of props, but hey- somebody has to keep them open. After a half a roll of packing tape and gluing our control horns back on,we finally got the hang of it.We FLEWWWWW! Intentional LOOPS! Stall turns[also preplanned] Almost HOVVVERING into the wind.We felt like true aviators-It was great!
My son & I want to thank All you guys [Dr.Kiwi, Sierra Gold,Matt Kirsch & others] who gave us advice in setting up our plane. We are going to order new batteries this week. From what I've seen in this forum, more mah means longer flight times and more cells gives you more power. Our current battery[400mah] only gives us 3 minute flights. We are going to upgrade to a Pixie 20P ESC. A couple of you guys Have suggested the 8 cell KAN 650's over the 8 cell KAN 1050's. Is there a weight difference that makes the 650's preferable to the 1050's?
Again, thanks guys for all of your help.

RE: Flew the Slow Stick today
Congrats! You're hooked.
Great hobby to enjoy with your son.
Up until a couple of months ago, I flew my SS on 8 cell KAN 1050 packs. They are heavier than the 650s, but my theory was that the SS can haul the weight and the weight made the SS tolerate wind better. The 1050s also give longer duration.
Either will work and the 650s may let the SS fly slower and float a little better.
Enjoy,
Sierra Gold

A two cell lithium at nominally 7.2 volts like a Thunder Power 2000 will give you maybe a half hour at half throttle and is light weight for destroying less when your landing is not so good. Down side is 35 to 50 $ if you hurt the battery and you MUST have a charger meant for lithium. Also there goes $50 if you have a bad crash and there are safety things to abide by.
I like a heavier battery like OK the Kahn 1050 or the 1100 Hecell when the wind gets up. Agreed the Kahn has a nice low ESR but the slow stick only draws about 8 amps at full throttle and much less at half. A 720 stick Nickel metal hydride 7 or 8 cells is good for maybe 14 minutes at half throttle and is also lighter for more acrobatics when the wind is light, which is when beginners should be flying. The 8 cell gives better performance but will kill a motor faster.
