Default ESC for NMH vs Lipo Bat

I have a Great Plains C-10 ESC for my 480 brushed motor. I want to transition to a Lipo Bat and brushless motor; ie 280 brushless. Plan to fly a 3D foamy. Will this brushed ESC work with Lipo Bat. What size Lipo do you recommend for the 280 brushless motor. Thanks. Mike.

Default RE: ESC for NMH vs Lipo Bat

A brushed ESC will not operate a brushLESS motor.

Otherwise, there is no reason you can't use any ESC with a LiPoly battery. Electricity is electricity; it's not like LiPoly electricity is "liver flavored" or something, and the ESC will choke on it... As long as you don't exceed the voltage rating of the ESC (i.e. cell count), it will work fine.

The only reason you SHOULDN'T use just any ESC with a LiPoly battery is if you have absolutely no self restraint, and fly until the LVC kicks in. LiPolys have a higher low-voltage limit than NiCd or NiMH (3.0 Volts per cell), and the LVC on typical ESCs is too low. Draw down LiPoly batteries much under 3.0 Volts per cell, and you could cause damage. Some chargers will refuse to charge LiPolys if they detect the voltage is below 3.0 Volts per cell.
