Using what prop? Bigger prop = bigger electrical load. Bigger electrical load = more heat. Pick the right prop and your motor will not burn out. Need to also know what type aircraft in order to pick out proper propellor.

I think it was Matt Kirsch who said that 11V is hard on the 400 motors. You are asking them to rev higher than they were designed for. So with that in mind, I would say that you will get less life from the motor than if you were running it off less volts.

You can always 'stay off the throttle', but we all know how hard that is to resist!

3S lipos seem best suited for brushless motors, not to say people don't use them elsewhere.

I have been flying a Pico cub as a trainer and am using a 9x5 prop on a 5.1 geared 400. I use a 9.6v 600mh and like the performance but only get about 8 min out of it. I also use a 7.2v/600mah and it is more flight time. Will bringing down the prop size and pitch to say about a 8.4 give me more flight time?

The only luck I've had running speed 400 motors on 3 cell lipoly is to go to the long can speed 400 motors sold a places like Hobby Lobby for around 12 bucks. This 12 volt motor I'm using turns 140 watts of power with a 2.1 gear box and 3 lipo 1500 mah batteries. If I stay on the throttle the motor does get a little warm but as far as motor burnout, nothing yet.

If you are addressing this to me, I don't know.[] I have heard that higher volt packs of the same rating will drain faster, but haven't experienced it yet. I would think that it all comes down to how you use the electrons stored in the pack. Use 'em up fast and you get less time. Use 'em up slow and you get longer flight times.

In the end, I would be more concerned about flying my plane the way I like it rather than worry about flight times. What's 15 minutes of floating around if you find that boring? You are better off buying more battery packs and having fun at the field.

I believe these are also called 480 motors.
