Do any planes still use NiCad's?
I was wondering if anyone knows of any plane still for sale that uses NiCad batteries. Seems like most are now LiPo or NiMH packs.
I just destroyed an old Sukhoi, and if the repairs don't work out I need another plane to at least reuse the radio componants and servos. It has a 280BB motor, 8 cell NiCad pack and 4 channel radio with what I believe are micro servos.
I would like to re-use most of the guts to keep costs down, any ideas??? []

Hi Todd, I grew up right near Novi, (Chubb Rd) too bad about Ribcrackers loosing the field after all those years. Regarding your plane. Your rx and servos are fine even the motor may be usable but I strongly encourage you to make the jump into brushless and lipo. If you like the 3D thing go to 3Dfoamy.com and download plans for another Sukhoi made from depron or fan fold foam. Very easy to build and they fly incredible. The power systems are also listed so no guesswork needed on which motor/prop/battery to use.
Hope this helps and welcome to RCU![8D]

Thanks a lot. I just got back into RC after being out of it for almost 10 years. I plan on joining the Pontiac Miniature Aircraft Club up in Highland this summer for my gas trainer.
I bought this Sukhoi from a coworker (mostly for the radio) and proceeded to destroy it on the first attempt at flight [].
I wanted something I could fly easily in the field across the street anytime, instead of driving up to the RC club.
My next stop after work today is Carlton Hobbies to buy some glue, once I figure out what is the best for it.

Its foam, with a little bit of balsa structure on the inside. I'm trying to do this on the cheap, my fiance doesn't understand that 1 plane is not enough for all occasions. I was hoping that this thing would be ready to fly, and all I needed, but on Saturday it had no intention of flying, except straight into the ground!
Could the battery pack possibly be old and not as powerful as it once was?

Can't answer for the power pack. But get some Gorrilla glue or Elmer's Pro Bond, both are polyurethane glue. Give the joint a spritz of water and a thin film of glue on one side, clamp securely and cover the outside joint with some masking tape. Wipe off the exess before you tape the joint. It will foam up an fill all the crannies and hold tight, really good stuff. Let the whole thing sit overnight and have fun tomorrow.

That I can't tell you. I know the plane hasn't been flown in a few years. I charged the battery and tested it, and it got all green lights on my cheapo charger/tester. The only marking on the pack is a $6.00 price tag.
