Is my battery dead? very odd...
So, i have an electrifly 640mah li po. I have it on my flatout turmoil...
I needed to replace a servo for my elevator and went from a hs-55 to a hs-56 feather with the karbonite gears. I mention this because i'm not sure if somehow this servo could be pulling more power because my battery after being charged today wouldn't fly the plane.
Now, last time i flew it, it did seem to die a little quicker but i wasn't really sure how long i messed with it after my 1 minute flight where i did a harrier landing since my elevator was not working at all....(yep, i was nervous as hell, especially since i was flying over a lake!!!)
Anyways, i fix the problem and recharge it, then today it wouldn't fly. It was as if the motor wouldn't pull the plane and the battery was dieing...
Do li po batteries not last long? I charged it maybe 20-25 times now, definitely not more. Could the new servo be pulling to much power, even when not moving that servo AT ALL?
Any help is appreciated greatly.
Thanks from an electric newbie...
Mike

Did you leave the battery connected to the ESC overnight?
This will drain the battery down, even if the switch is OFF.. the switch just disconnects the ESC from the receiver. The ESC still draws power from the battery regardless.

Mike,
Measure the voltage of the batt-- 2 cell should read 7.4v
You may need to slow charge .5 amp the batt and see if that brings the batt back up to a full charge.
I f you are reading less than 3 volts per cell your may be bad ?
Bob

nope. i actually don't have a switch on the plane at all. i connect the battery and it's on. I charged it then left for the field int he same day. battery was not hot when i flew...err, tried to fly but was hot when i was done running it at full power and trying to figure it out.
No idea what the deal is really but it stinks cause i only have that 1 battery and the other 2 are on back order at my local hobby shop.
Any other ideas?
Thanks for the quick reply,
Mike

unfortunately i will need another charger for that. i have the little blue eflite charger. simple and easy. not sure if paying $80-100 for the trinton is worth finding out that the battery is bad...hehe
I'll ponder the idea though.
Thank you,
Mike

to be honest, i'm unsure. it has flown fine about 20 flights but i must say that i did recently leave it in the car during the day and i assume it could have gotten heated from the sun for a day or 2 prior to my last good flight, where i "thought" the battery died a bit quicker...
You think it isn't holding a full charge anymore because of that? Is that possible?
thanks,
Mike

Yes, it is possible to overheat a lipo sitting in a car.
One of mine pooched a cell doing just that.
Lipos require a LOT of TLC. They are susceptible to heat from drawing too much current, and heat during normal operation on a hot day.
It's said to be possible to restore an overheated Lipo to reliable service, but I haven't been able to.
