Big electric motor?
Hi
What would you suggest for a large but cheap electric motor to generate about 7 pounds of thrust this will be powered off a 12 volt power supply its for a science fair project so it wont actually fly at all,
What do you recommend trying to keep it as low cost as possible so if you know of something heavy and cheap that would work.
Also what prop would you recommend?
Thanx
Steven

RE: Big electric motor?
Because the project is to test thrust in relevance to the cowl size, All test will be done on the ground on a test stand, The reason for the size is that larger means more accurate and less chance small things change the results.

Steven,
You can see some brushed electric motors [link=http://www.hobby-lobby.com/speed700.htm]here[/link]. They can run directly off 12v DC without a controller but the thrust will not meet your 7lb goal.
If you gear the GR6317 SPEED 700 BB Turbo 12V Electric Motor with a 2:1 gearbox, you can achieve up to 3.5lbs of thrust.
A call to Hobby Lobby will let you know if the [link=http://www.hobby-lobby.com/drives.htm]HLH712[/link] Olympus Belt Drive will work on the Speed 700 motor.
Good luck!

You'll need this prop and shaft adapter. A call to the Sales staff at Hobby Lobby can also help you get the correct mating items.
APC [link=http://www.hobby-lobby.com/elecprop.htm]PE12080E[/link] 12x8E Thin Electric Prop
[link=http://www.hobby-lobby.com/propadap.htm]MJ4704[/link] Collet Prop Adapter for 5mm Shaft, M6
I don't see the clam shells for Speed 700 motors anymore at Hobby Lobby. They have greatly reduced their brushed motor accessories over the past few years due to the lack of demand.

RE: Big electric motor?
If you need it cheap have you tried your local electronic surplus store?
They have lots of motor that can probably come close to producing a few dirty pounds of thrust at 12volts
and no ESC needed.
