Default Mega 16/15/4 or Astro Flight 020 for Zagi ?

Hi ya'll ...

Which one would be better for a Zagi... Mega 16/15/4 or the Astro 020?

I am ready to go brushless... I have a Zagi 400x but I wish to know the differences between the Astro Flight 020 brushless "zagi" motor and the Mega 16/15/4. These are the two I have found to be the most popular ones used in zagis but no one has pointed out the differences, not just technical data but how will the zagi fly? Battery time and performance using the stock KR 1700 AU pack?

Thank you in advance.

The RCU electric forums are not exactly the most active on the Internet. Don't get all bent out of shape thinking that you're being ignored. Your post will stay at on the front page of the list for several days, so if anyone that can answer your questions reads it, they'll answer.

My take on your situation: Compared to the stock motor, performance from either of these motors will be unbelievable. You simply can't go wrong no matter which one you choose. I'd get the Mega, simply because I have one on a different plane, and I'm a sucker for brand loyalty.

Watch for "Zagi flap" though. The Zagi's wing isn't the strongest, and it will literally flap like a bird if you get it going too fast. Try http://www.myzagi.com for information on making your Zagi stronger.

Default Mega 16/15/4 or Astro Flight 020 for Zagi ?

Thank you for your reply. Well... I don't really need any more answers since I already made the decision and acquired a mega 16/15/4 and tried it today... man it was AWSOME!!! I went to the flying field with my Zagi and my Spadet LC-40 and I flew the spadet once but it was really windy and gusty. So after the first flight on the Spadet I decided to wait and see if the wind died... well it didn't but I was anxious to test the new Mega... so I decided to give it a shot... wow! That is all I coud say, performance was excellent great vertical and 45 degree climgs, great speed. And Batteries lasted a good 15 mins in average I ended up running 4 battery packs (1700mah). Wind didn't bother it at all. I bet on a calm day I could get even longer times. Thank you for your response again.

Default How much and where?

Hey do you mind if I ask where you got your mega and how much it cost with the speed control? What control did you use? And finally, I was also considering the Astro 020, so what swung your vote in favor of the mega? Thanks for your time to answer my questions,
Mark

Dynamo Electrics has a good package price on Mega 16/15/x series with Castle Creations controllers and prop adapter for $144 and 'free' shipping right now.

Default Answer...

I got my Mega 16/15/4 and Castle Creations Controller at a local hobby shop, Hobby Wearhouse in Minneapolis, MN for around $150 both. I went with the mega over the Astro 020 because they had the astro with the controller installed for $180. So basically price was what made me go the mega way. I have flown with a friend who has a Zagi with the Astro 020 and he was using the same prop and battery I was using. The speed was pretty close, although mine is a little heavier than his. (My zagi was the first plane I built and I used a little too much epoxy and too much tape making pretty patterns). But still flies wayyyyy better than the 480 and longer flight times.
The only observation was that his batteries lasted a little longer than mine. That could also happen if he is maintaining his batteries better than I do mine, which he probably is.
I don't regret my choice and I enjoy my zagi more than ever since I fly it more often. I have 4 battery packs and that is good for about 1 hr of fun usually during lunch break and I don't have to deal with the mess of gas powered planes. (I have 3 gas planes also). So the Zagi is my lunch flyer and my gas planes are my evening flyers. Good luck with your decision, either way (mega or astro) you will be satisified I can guarantee you.

Have fun!

Default Mega 16/15/4 or Astro Flight 020 for Zagi ?

if you guys are going to stick with your 8 cell packs and the 5x5 propellers then I recommend that you get the 16/15/3 you have better thrust. the 16/15/4 is really better for 10 cell packs or larger propellers say 6x5. overall the 16/15/3 is the best because it'll help minimize weight which is very important with zagi stability and overall aerobatics. also stick with the 1700 nicds, the nimh don't supply enough amps to power the mega with good thrust.my zagi runs with the 16/15/3 5x5 8 cell kr1700. I soar at 800-1000 feet(zagi looks like a nat) and speeds hit about 70 before I get the zagi flap, and I,m very light.do it you love it....

Default mega motor

For what it is worth, i run the same `16/15/4 mega motor. With a prop adapter and a 7.5 prop it's awsome. You will have to cut opening bigger for prop to fit, But it is night and day.
