Default Compare Electric Motors

How does one compare electric motors to each other to determine which ones from each manufacturer are equal to each other? In other words, how do I know which AXI is equal to which PowerPro to which HXT, etc. [sm=spinnyeyes.gif]

danny,

most motors now have at least there size and kv on the websites or on the motors themselves. so a motor might have these numbers ie 40 45 700kv what that tells you is the motor is 40 mm wide X 45mm long and has a 700 rpm per volt put into the motor .

or maybe 30 35 1450kv and so on.

now some mfg are even putting the constant and max watts of there motors along with suggested prop sizes as well. and some like E-flight and exceed monsterpower motors are even adding what the motors are close to as far as glow engines.

ie power 25, 32, 46, 60 and so on makes it real easy then.

hope this helps a little.

I don't see how knowing the size of the motor helps.

But it is great when they tell you which IC engine they compare to, but not all manufacturers do this.

The main issue I am having if finding the same equivalent engine between AXI and say E-Flight so I can compare prices. For example, what AXI motor is the same as the E-Flight Power 160? Do I compare Kv and max current, or what? Since it does not seem that all manufacturers give the same information out about their motors, it doesnā€™t look like there is anything in common between them to make a comparsion with.

Donā€™t suppose there is a chart somewhere that says this motor from E-Flight is the same as this motor from HXT, etc.?

I do see that some give the wieght of the plane thier motor will fly, but the range is so large that it is almost unless when trying to compare one motor against another.

Thanks for any info.

danny,

welcome to the wonderfull world of electrics . yes you are understanding it right, you need to base your choices by compairing motors size and KV and current.

also remember that alot will depend on what type of plane, weight and type of wing all play into motor selection.

it looks like the AXI 5330 series would be close to the power 160 .

power 160 specs here=

Specs
Type:Brushless outrunner
Size:Equivalent to or surpassing the power of a 160-size 2-stroke glow engine
Bearings or Bushings:Ball bearings
Wire Gauge:13
Recommended Prop Range:18x8 to 20x10
Voltage:33.3ā€“38.4
RPM/Volt (Kv):245
Resistance (Ri):.03 ohms
Idle Current (Io):1.45A @ 10V
Continuous Current:60A
Maximum Burst Current:78A (15 sec)
Cells:28ā€“32 Ni-MH/Ni-Cd or 9Sā€“10S Li-Po
Speed Control:85ā€“110A High Voltage Brushless
Weight:650 g (23.0 oz)
Overall Diameter:63mm (2.50 in)
Shaft Diameter:8mm (.30 in) (Includes two 12mm threaded prop shaft adapters with 1.5 pitch)
Overall Length:64mm (2.50 in)

AXI specs here= http://www.modelmotors.cz/index.php?...e=18&line=GOLD

hope this helps..... im sure matt or DRkiwi will come along soon and be able to help more than I can but its a start for you.

I really like that AXI web site. Everything you need on one page, provided you want an AXI motor.

Thanks for the info. It helps.

Be careful with the Axi data. They tend to be a little "optimistic."

And most of the Chinese sites are "even more optimistic"!

Although "caveat emptor" always holds, and many grains of salt need to be used when reading "overly-optimistic claims"... if you look at physical size, Kv and max. amps/watts... you can match up motors from different makers "reasonably" well. High quality makers are likely to be more truthful than "fly-by-night" companies.

Scorpion motors has a good motor comparison chart.

Check it out:

What motor and ESC would you recommend for the Hawk Sky?

What specific AXI motor did you find this to be true of?
