I do not charge my LiPo's in the aircraft. Generally, that method is considered unsafe by the AMA[>:].

I went to Wal-mart and picked up a portable document safe (it is fireproof, cost is $30.00 or so, cheap) and lined the botom of the safe with velcro.

I charge my batts inside of the safe and if *anything* does go wrong, all I have to do is close the lid and wait for the smoke to clear. Really.

The doc safe is also very handy for transporting the batteries to and from the flying site as the velcro tha is on them keeps them from moving around when stuck ot the bottom of the safe.

That's how I do it.

I prepare four different models, each one complete with receiver, battery and speed control; I fly one and start charging it soon as it lands and go to the next model, on so on. I always charge them inside the model, never had a mishap in many years.

If you renew your batteries every two years you should not be so afraid, only when they are very old, crashed or misused then you should worry, otherwise no problem.

Excellent idea, if you're mad at your plane, radio equipment, chargers and anything else within 10 feet or so...

New batteries, charging for maiden flight. And this isn't something I grabbed off the net, I was grabbing a fire extiniguisher as this picture was taken.

My opinion is only do it IF you really have to. Lipos burning whilst charging is not that rampant but why take the risk and fuel the fire with more wood ... I think the picture says it all.

I also charge my lipo's in a Target document safe (on sale it was only ~$20). I place a small wood shim to keep the lid up so it wont pinch the wires. The ehought her eis that even if I'm in the next room and the Lipo chaches fire the wood shim wiil burn very fast and the lid will close automatically putting out the fire. THe best insurance against any fire is a good charger. By that I mean one that cuts off if it detects capacity full, over voltage and even meassure the battery temperature.

That fire is from a lipo battery? Thats not cool at all... Heard about how unstable they were, just never thought they could do that... Jesus man, I definetely don't want to mess with lipo's now.

All that's needed with LiPo's is prorper care and [>:]READ[>:] the safety how-to data that accompany them. Glow fuel can be dangerous too. It's all in the matter of learning and rememering to be safe with whatever power source your are using. To wit, 110 V household electricty can be dangerous also. But... all of us have learned to give it the care and respect it needs to insure safety. Same goes for all souces of compact energy.

So Doug 44, now that you have been scared off of Lipos and "...never going to mess with them." What ARE you going to mess with? Has anyone offered you an alternative other than going back to flow power?
