Need help- battery for aspire ( older plane) I am new to this...

Years ago I used to fly RC planes for a short time and would like to start again.

I need some Help - I have an Old electric Aspire plane I have never flown. It has been sitting in my garage for 10 years and having a person who works at hobbytown fix it. He told me I would have to find a battery and said I needed...

He said, a 7 to 8 cell, 500-800 ma Nimh battery. I have a Hitec radio/receiver. I went to a battery store, batteries and bulbs who can make batteries and they still didn't know exactly what I wanted?

Am I missing something?... does anyone know this plane and have a link or can tell me exactly I need. I would like to get three. I prefer new ones. Need help, thanks

Welcome back to RC! Here's a good thread on the Aspire: http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/rc-g...anger-9-a.html The answer to your question depends on the motor and esc that are in the airplane. If you had a brushed motor, you could use a NiCD. In the thread there are various comments on what size NiCD folks found worked for them. If it is brushless, you could go lipo. See what setup is closest to yours and let us know. Maybe a picture of the motor and esc would help. This is complex and what may be lowest cost, might not be the best solution. You could consider getting a used brushless motor and esc here and go lipo. Three nicd packs will add up and they will most likely not be appropriate for a newer airplane.

The original Aspire was a great airframe with an inadequate power system. When new the climb rate was not impressive. Now the system is obsolete. You would be better off converting to a lipo battery with a brushless outrunner, and esc. You will gain performance and loose battery weight in the process. A Radian power system or equivalent would be a good alternative.

Yes the power system that comes with the plane is adequate at best. As mentioned you could easily upgrade it to a brushless system and use a small 2-cell LiPo battery pack.

The original battery was a 6cell 1500mah NiCd pack. If you want to run the original motor system you will need a NiMh pack around 1500mah and at least 6 cell. Such as this: https://www.horizonhobby.com/DYN1050

thanks for your input. The motor is not brushless, it's older. A person is fixing the rudder to my plane I just broke and should I get a brushless motor and then I would need a new esc and receiver? I I moved up to better parts will that be expensive? I don't know? Any ideas, thanks for your help and I wished I was as knowledgeable as you people are to respond. I appreciate it.
