Default Micro 4 Star EP

Well, I bought an AR6400BL reciever at perry a couple of weekends ago because I have always wanted to scratch build a little micro plane. Since foam is not my thing, I wanted to build it out of balsa and cover it. I have always liked the four star plane and I have the 40, 60 and 120 that i currently fly now. They fly so good that it inspired me to build a micro four star using all this new micro gear that spektrum is putting out now.

The plane itself is about 12 1/2" long and it has about a 16 1/2" wingspan. The gear that I will be using is the AR6400BL receiver, two micro linear servos from spektrum, a 4000 kv 3.1gram brushless motor with a 3x2 prop, and a 2 cell 120mah lipo battery (the one that comes with the beast). I made a removeable front hatch on the top to easily access the battery for each flight. For the landing gear, I just bought a complete spare set of gear for the parkzone j3 cub which look like they fit good. I made an easy removeable mount on the bottom of the plane so they slide in an out just like a factory fit.

I am half way into the build of it and wasnt going to post anything on it until I was done but I just couldnt wait any longer. The plane is built up now and I am currently covering it now with a tissue type covering. I will admit that I went through a few firsts with this build. It was my first completely from scratch build in general where I drew up the plans in autocad and then built it, although I did take a lot of styling ques from the other four star planes so I dont know if that counts or not. This is also the first plane I have ever coverd it tissue which isint as hard or as bad as I thought it was going to be. I have the plans that I am continually updating and when I get them done I can share them if someone would like to build this plane as well. What do you guys think?

That Sir, is a work of art!! Beautiful!! Are you going with 3 channels or with 4 servos? You appear to have mounts for aileron servos.

It will be full 4 channel, 2 of the servos are on the AR6400 reciever and then I will have two more stand a lone linear servos, one for each aileron.

Here are some of the pictures where I covered te wing in tissue. Its not my best but for the first time using tissue, it didnt turn out half bad. You can also see the two aileron servos on the wing however onlyone is taped on right now. I also took a few pictures next to the micro t-6 texan for size refrence.

I just finished covering the micro 4 star last night and I just flew it for the first time today. I needed a little more nose weight than I imagined. I will half to go back to the plans and tweak a few things to fix that problem. Other than that it flew very well. Overall this four star is a little heavier compared to the foam planes in the same category but that little brushless motor had plenty of power to pull it. If any thing once I took off, I needed to back the throttle off because it went like a rocket. the ailerons although kind of narrow, really are effective and it can roll very quickly. I had to back the ailerons down a little to suite me a little better. Im pretty satisfied especially since it was sort of a prototype build project but it turned out nice. I didnt get anyone to film it for me but I can post a few pictures of the finished plane a little bit later on.

Well, I left my laptop at home so now I cant post any of the finished pictures until next weekend, sorry about that. Anyway, here are the plans that I drew up in AutoCAD for any of you guys who might be interested in building it. They are sort of crude in the sense of plans but if you have built a few planes before you should be able to make sense of them. There still might be a few things that I need to refine on them but overall someone should be able to build the plane from these plans. I designed it with some interlocking parts to make it have stronger joints but it makes it a little harder to cut out that way by hand. I dont have a laser cutter but I did cut out all these parts by hand on my scroll saw. If you build it, just try to keep the tail end light or else you might need a little bit bigger battery.

I got a chance to fly my four star again a few times today but I havent been able to get a calm day yet. It was a little gusty but I was sill able to fly it around ok. I am still surprised at how fast this design is. With the little brushless outrunner I have on it, it really gets up and goes. It can probably fly as fast as the beast but it can also slow down and be pretty relaxing. Any way, the reason for posting tonight is because my original four star came out a little more tail heavy than I would have liked. I had to add a tiny piece of lead in the front because I could not fit a bigger battery. The last issue I ran into was the amount of wiring in the battery compartment limited it severely to what size battery I could put in the nose. So, I fixed all those problems by extending the nose out about 3/8". I moved the firewall forward and now there should be plenty of room for the bigger 180 mah battery and there should be plenty of room for the wires as well. Now this fuselage should balance just about right. These are the new revised plans that I made the above updates on.
