if it were basswood, it would explain why your plane would be too heavy to fly. basswood is much stiffer, and more dense, and it can be brittle at times depending on its quality. balsa is just flat out fragile, but 1/16th or thicker usually holds up well enough for most applications.

My toonracer came to an untimely end last night [] . My girlfriend was giving it a whirl and was not used to the speed. I was showing her how to wind it up high and then bring it down in a power off dive getting maximum speed before turning on full juice where it would climb almost vertically for a few meters. After I pointed out to avoid a big puddle to her left she promptly decked it right into the puddle at full tilt, submerging the whole plane.

We retired it for the night to let it dry in the hope of saving the electrics when I stepped on it getting my 3d plane.

Oh, yeah. When they are built with super glue they do survive a roughish landing on grass quite well. Mine held up suiprisingly well... even after hitting the puddle... until my foot did the job.

Nick, big thumbs up to you for the design. If only I could post a foto of my modded toonrace.

Now, onto my next one..........

Clive, sorry to hear about the watery crash. thats usually how it goes though, my episodes are usually more "dont hit that tree right there" and of course, i hit it i cant take claim for the design of the Toon Racer, it was drawn up by a Michael Henriksen, same guy who created the BUMP. scroll about 3/4 down: http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=210688

Hi Micro builder,
This is my first post on this site, which is quite appropriate as I just flew my first bulsa plane (toonracer) made as per your instructions and it was a delight to see it fly albeit in a slightly tail heavy fashion. Just wanted to thank you for your time and insight in giving such detailed instructions with lots of photos, it was a truly great effort on your part . Thanks so much.

Hi Nick,
Just thought I would post some of the models I have done so far after your tutorial now it takes me about 2 hours from start to finish a far cry from my first attempt. Built two just from 3 view pictures, the Zero and Spitfire

Top left Zero Top right: spitfire
Middle DC3
Front left toonracer and front right P38

All fly differently the DC 3 gets a lot of lift, the zero is very quick and edgy as is the spitfire though not to the same degree the toonracer is very predictable and handles some wind ok and the P38 is very nimble.

Just a question have you been able to mod the AA rx for use with an actuator I just built my first one and I am keen to use it but I dont know how to hook it up to the rx any help would be appreciated.

As far as the actuator mod, check here: http://www.falcon1.net/~ars/rcmodels.html

You can add the actuator (single coil, dual wound) without doing the mosfet mod, but you will get better turns in one direction. The mosfet is about $1 but you'll need some small component soldering skills to get it done. If you already wound the act, you may as well just try it out

What is the best type of Balsa to use? I am going to my hobbytown tomorrow to get it. Also I have a big sheet of 2mm and 3mm foam. Would this work?
Also is it possible to put in ailrons? I was thinking about using the micro p51 electronics. [X(]
