living room flyer
hey guys,
well i finally got to make my first LRF. i took the electronics out of my prairie duster and scaled up the Square5.5 plane design to give me a 6x2" wing, giving me pleanty of wing area. she's pretty darn slow, slow enough to fly lazy circles or figure eights in my not-so-big house. i need to adjust a few things here and there to smooth it all out, but there she is. total weight, 3.2 grams (less than the Plantraco Butterfly, i believe). i didnt get any video yet, but i will soon. here's a couple pictures though.

thanks guys.
Neurotex, the whole thing is 1/32" balsa except the motor stick, which is some lightly sanded 1/16th balsa. i just cut everything out of a balsa sheet and started glueing. before i put the tissue on, the whole thing weighed .1 gram, the tissue and glue added more weight than i was hoping, so i'm going to be ordering some micro film to get the weight back down. i should be under 3 grams after thats all done.
after i get finished tweaking some things and getting it to fly a bit better, i'll shoot some video. as of right now, she's kinda stuck in a 5' right hand turn, pulling out of that turn causes it to nose up and stall, then float down slowly so something must be just slightly out of whack. i can get a nice 2 or 3 foot right hand turn out of it though, i could almost fly it in the closet!

i thought about the ceiling fan too, but i flew it outside in dead calm air and still had the same problem. i'm getting a larger prop carved up for me to try out, the one thats on there now might not have enough thrust to cover those draggy wings.
in the mean time, i finally got a package in the mail that i've been waiting for for a couple weeks. its a RTF IR LRF (did you get all that?
), made over in Japan called the Aero Soarer. right out of the box it weighs only .3 grams more than my LRF, its powered by a capacitor so it only flys for 30-45 seconds, but it only takes 30-45 seconds to recharge. the cap will be replaced with a 30mah cell once i figure out how much power the motor is pulling. they probably wont be sold in the US anytime soon, we're so freakin far behind on fun little toys like this. i got mine off ebay for less than 40 bucks shipped, right before the seller started jacking up the prices. do a search for TomiTech Aero Soarer or something similar, he might still be selling some.

the rudder isnt proportional, but the throttle has 4 steps, which is enough for a plane this light. and, since it is so light, it just doesnt have the mass to hurt itself during a crash, i've hit just about everything in the house so far with no damage. flying it is a bit tricky with the way they've got it setup, the rudder is angled to the right so it'll stay in a right hand turn, push left on the TX and the turn widens, hold left long enough and it'll straighten out, turn left, then stall and fall. i'm sure with the rudder pointed forward like normal, it'll control just fine. its also hard for me to remember to keep the TX pointed at the plane, since its IR, not RF, it loses signal easier, doesnt have nearly the range (enough for indoors though), and it doesnt work as well in direct sunlight. but, for the price, its a great deal, better than the AA even!

You cut your Square6 glory time short by whipping out the Aero Soarer Nick. Your plane is way nicer than the Soarer.
But since we are on it, my daughter's boyfriend is a Marine recently sent to Okinawa. He is suposedly going to send me an Aero Soarer soon. Can't wait to get it and rip into it and make something that looks better and flies longer.
Tomy can't keep up with the demand or we would all have one (or a dozen!) each already.
Back to your plane, Still cooler than the Soarer, very nice work!

yeah, the Sqaure6 kinda got lost in the shuffle, but since they're both LRF's i suppose its ok
if nothing else, i can at least take solace in knowing i built the Sqaure6 myself, which is always a nice feeling. the RX, motor/gearbox/prop, and actuator are probably incredibly light, the foam is most likely the majority of the weight. i've been tinkering with the plane a lot, doing everything i can to remove the right hand turn thats seemingly built into it (even removed the verticle stabilizer, like EvaderMaster mentioned. heck, i even closed up the hole in the lower verticle stabilizer to make it functional, but she still turns to the right. i've trimmed and trimmed, changed motor angles, tail feather angles, and she still turns right. at least it does turn to the left now, figure eights arent easy in my small place, but its doable for sure. certainly worth the money.
