RE: What's the latest in batteries?
Hi Doug,
The CellPro 10S is hard to beat. You can get them very reasonably priced at F3A-Unlimited. I have two of them going on their third season and I still haven't seen anything I'd rather have. The only thing it doesn't do is discharge but most of the chargers that will discharge at such low amperage that it makes it pretty much useless for that purpose anyway. For discharging, I use a CBA II from West Mountain Products. Hope this helps.

Can someone point me to a charger that can measure IR that won't break my checking account?

I just checked the specs on the Sky-Lipo 4400 5S packs and the pricing on the 4400s is strange.
Sky Lipo 4400 5S 20C 569grams $44
Sky Lipo 4400 5S 30C 589grams $51.70
Sky Lipo 4400 5S 40C 590grams $44
I mistakenly order a set of the 30C packs, thought I was ordering the 40C packs. Totally my error, oh well. Well post initial results here when I get the packs.

RE: What's the latest in batteries?
QC, I, like Verne have charged my batteries with the Cellpro 10s charger for the last 3 years. Currently my IR readings for the Sky lipo 4400mah 20c 5s packs are between 1.7-2.6 after 24 flights. After 49 flights on the Nano 4000mah 25-50c 5s batteries the IR readings are between 2.8-3.7. BTW, the Sky lipo's and the Nano packs are still strong after 6 1/2 to 7 minutes and their performance is very similiar including the amps Hope this helps, Everette

RE: What's the latest in batteries?
I would like to ask a question:
I bought two brand x 5000 6cell batteries and have charged them approximatly 50 times and now they lose their punch just a couple minutes into the flight. Can I still use them or should I recycle them? (meaning throw them away in a responsible way) I don't use a seperate receiver battery so I'm also concerned about that. Also, can a person buy a single cell and replace the bad one?, if that is the problem.
Thanks

RE: What's the latest in batteries?
desertrider49, based on my limited understanding and 6 years of experience using lipos is that once a battery can no longer hold it's voltage and amps after 2-3 minutes, the battery has probably reached the end of it's useful life. I would be very careful using them as the power source for both the motor and servos, etc. I'm not a fan of using a Esc with a Bec. They are probably reliable but, I just don't want to take the chance. It may not be as easy as replacing a single cell. You need to determne first if there is a dead cell or if the all the cells are weak and have reached the end of there useful life based on how we use them. Hope my response has made sense. Perhaps some others can add their knowledge, thoughts and experience.....Everette

It's pretty tough to replace a single cell. You would need to be able to properly solder the tabs, and think that isn't a simple thing to do. Also, it wouldn't do you much good to replace a single cell because that one would have a much lower IR than the other cells in the pack. It would end up dying quickly.

Thanks Steve, that's what I thought. I won't be buying any more of that brand.

RE: What's the latest in batteries?
Steve, two years ago I replaced a single cell that had died in one of my 5s packs and no it was not easy to do. I was aware that this could be a problem as it relates to the IR's. I was then and now using the Cellpro 10S charger and noticed the charger was having some difficulty as it "charged balanced" this particular pack. You are right, it wasn't very long after that this pack began to fail as it relates to our use. Just thought you might want to know___Everette

Well, it was bound to happen. Someone at Hobby King took my suggestion and ran with it! They have just introduced 2 new Nano 4500mah 5s versions. The first one rated at 35-70c and selling for $57.29 and the 2nd one rated at 45-90c and selling for $66.78. I can see the lipo battery fight starting to heat up! Thought some of you out there might want to know. Regards, Everette

Looks like the weight will make them a non-player @ 750-800 grams.
Maybe they're actually less than that.

Tim, what you mentioned is their shipping weigth, they are actually 570g and 630g which absolutely OK.

Anyone got a clue where I can get one?

even better than LiPo is Life. Here you have it
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...dProduct=14076
unfortunately its not in stock, the only way to get it is to make a separate order and wait for it. It fits perfectly in JR 9303, so also is OK for 12x

FWIW - I've played around with a couple of the Hobby People (yeah.. you read right) 5S-5000mah packs and they're VERY good. In fact, they hold their voltage at full power better than anything else I've run so far, though admittedly I haven't tried any recent generation of TP packs so I don't have a frame of reference there. At $100 a pack, they're cheaper than TP, but more expensive than the HK stuff for sure. Not interested in a brand war, just offering up info on another option.

Not sure if this qualifies as direct fit, but I'm second season with this thing and it is unbelievable! Sat all winter on the shelf and turned on last week like it was new. Runs for easy 10 hours, no memory loss, and charges using the supplied charging due to circuitry included in the factory design. Why JR and Futaba aren't using LiFe is beyond me.
