I cant speak for the silver bullet motor as I have not tried one personally but with the Himax F3A 210 with an APC 20.5 x 14E and Zippy Compact 35c 4500mah packs the airplane flys great and has tons of power! I understood the Silver Bullet would be a little weak for a P/F13 sequence but for everything else it is good. And with you being at sea level you shouldn't have any issue with the torque motor, plus you save 35grams and $50!

Went with the himax.

Also ordered an APC 20.5x14E and a falcon 20.5x14.5.

Now I just need to pick out some flight packs to practice with.
Suggestions??
Would like to keep the packs around $100 per set.

Thanks
Tony

Good choice!

I highly recommend the Zippy Compact 35c 4500mah packs from Hobby King. They go for about $50 each and only weigh about 1050grams as a pack! They go out of stock from the US warehouse quick, if they arent available the Nano-Tech packs are great as well.

vatechguy3,

I like extra power on all of my planes. Iasked the same questions as you a few pages back, when I was building mine.
Iended up with the Himax motor.

For a speed freak- power guy, this motor with the APC20.5x14 has PLENTY of power.

Ionly have 4 flights but, the power is plenty.

Hacker is twice the price!!! Ihave heard first hand that the motor powere between the Hi-max and the Hacker feels the same.

Update..... you made the right choice.

Pilot preference. I've seen guys fly 4500 to 5400s, with 5000s by far the most common, from what I have seen anyway. For the conditions and sequences I fly, 5000 is a good, all-around, choice.

Other brands I've seen guys fly that they like include GensAce, F3AU, and of course ThunderPower. The gotcha in LiPos is which balance connector to invest in/standardize on. Just a thought.

P.S. Ran my Vanquish on blue Turnigy 5S 5000 25C with good results last season, albeit at the Sportsman level so YMMV. I do believe that the basic Turnigys are underestimated, FWIW.

With good throttle management, yes. I can go through a full Masters sequence out here at a 4600' field elevation and I am only using about 3000mah. This also saves 6-10oz in battery weight from a 5000+ pack.

Yeah hobbypartz is out of stock.

Looking at hobby king.
They have turnigy 5s 5000mah 20c 666g packs for $41.
They have zippy compact 5s 5000mah 25c 590 packs for $45.

How do these packs work out??
Do you guys cut off the bullet connectors and solder on deans or ec5s?

ok, parts came in today.

got the motor bolted onto the firewall, ran into a few issues. see the pic below.

the wires are rubbing on the motorbox, should i sand a relief and run the wires beneath the motorbox, or can the wires be run out the back of the motor and through the holes in the firewall?

the instruction sheet talks about "cooling washers", should i use those isntead of the plywood spacer?

the falcon spinner does not fit on the himax prop shaft. the spinner ID is .313, while the prop shaft OD is .320. is it normal to drill out the spinner backplate slightly?

thanks,
tony

Another question for you guys:
Has anyone tried slightly larger wheel pants and wheels??
The stock ones are little small and I fly off of a grass field.

If so, which ones? Was think maybe the aero works 30cc extra pants. They are white.

responded.

beginning to think pattern is just like imac!
the falcon spinner does not fit the falcon prop! the cutout for the prop blade is not deep enough for the falcon 20.5x14.5!!

Props rarely fit the spinner without shaving the spinner opening.

Tony, I e-mailed you two old photos of how my motor & esc install looked originally.  It may help you decide on wire routing, or not.  Cheers!

Thanks Dana!

With the sky lipos and zippy compacts coming with 5.5mm bullets, has anyone converted the ESC over to those? Or made a deans to bullets adapter?

Good questions Tony, guys have their preferences for connectors, there are pros & cons to each configuration, like anything else in this hobby.  What I have not seen much of is adapters across connector types: Just have not really seen that much out there.  Would be more possible failure points, so perhaps not a great idea?   Guys just seem to pick one connector to standardize their gear on.  Coming from sport flying large electrics (8S quarter scale aerobats), I just stayed with Deans Ultras when moving up to 2m pattern, but that's as much due to convenience and sunk costs as anything else.  How's your install coming?  Good flying weather this weekend up here and we have a one day contest on Saturday in Jackson NJ.

Yeah I have plenty of deans ultra stuff.

But looking at the batteries, they are bullet style. Kinda seems wrong to cut off the connectors on brand new packs. But I guess if you have to do so be it.

I know what you mean- just did it for 10 5s packs. But instead of cutting them off, I've been de-soldering them which leaves that big ol' 10AWG wire pre-tinned for the re-soldering process. Helps the process go a little faster. Then, what to do with all these 5 and 5.5mm bullets that are piling up?

If you can shorten the wires, take off as much as possible. The Sky’s will save a bit of weight, but the Compacts use rope for wires. I cut off about half the length on the Compacts and solder Deans on them. You will save a bunch of weight.
The only issue you have with the Compacts is the wire is so thick it can be a challenge to solder the Deans. Here’s a tip. When you tin the wires, mash the end with a pair of pliers as the solder is cooling. It will help a bunch.

Yea, these were Compacts and I needed the length as the batterys were getting shoved into the nose of a converted Focus. Fortunately for me, Sportsman is rarely held to the weight rules

I have just recieved a new Vanquish. The covering is perfect, very soundly packed. I'm very impressed with what I have seen so far.
I noticed that the hinges are now a 'Robart' style point hinge, inplace of the CA style hinges depicted in the manual. Does anyone have experience with these? I am wondering whether I should swap them out with a Robart hinge?
Thanks in advance,
Nick Marson
