I have the opposite situation! I have had to limit the throttle travel as I was getting full power at half throttle. I only need about 40% of full travel to get 600watts, is there a method to stretch the throttle travel to 100% and still get only 40-50-% of full power?

John Agnew said,

My Vanquish Mk11 arrived this afternoon, very impressed with the quality and lightness of the airframe. Will start work tomorrow and intend to complete it in one day. Power will be Hyperion 3020-10 / CC Phoenix 45 / 4S 2600 Lipo / APC 13x6.5E for starters. The Hyperion just slots into the the pre-drilled and blind nut mount with no adjustment required, 4x Hitec 65MG servos.

John agnew,

Are you using a watt meter to determine the amp draw and watts? According to the Eflight motor calc, for a Hyperion 3020-10 a 13x6.5 prop will exceed the safe max current of the motor and the ESC. You should try a 11x6 or a 11x7 or a 12x6 and see if that doesn't bring your Amps back in spec for that motor and ESC combo. The Max current for that motor is 56A and that would also be about the safe burst current on the Phoenix 45 ESC. Also are you using a separate BEC with the Phoenix 45 ESC? Castle Creations recommends a separate BEC at voltages over 12.6

I'm flying my Vanquish on a motor that has about the same kv as yours and I'm using a APC 11x7e or a Xoar wood 12x6 and it flys extremely well on both props.

Thanks for your helpful reply. Yes, I have checked the amps and understand that the 13x6.5 is drawing too much current, that is why I have reduced the throttle travel. I have ordered a 12x6 which I think will do the job. I have disabled the Bec on the CC Phoenix as advised and am using a 900mah receiver pack. Pity that Hyperion don't do a 30 series motor with around 600kv which would work better with the 13x6.5 or similiar.

best regards

John,

APCE 12x6 should work just fine fine, tried other props but 12x6 was the best.
On my Mk1 Vanquish ran this prop on 4S with the Torque 2814 (820KV) & WOT 41A/590W. Also tried the Thumper 4240 (900KV), same prop & got 52A/720W.
Only issue I had with the Mk1 was it got blown around too much in the Scottish winds, how's the Mk2 in this respect ?

Steve

I now have a 12x6 but it is still drawing around 55amps / 900w at full power so I will still have to turn the wick down a bit to get to around 600w.

Four more flights on the Vanquish this afternoon, a bit blowy at around 10mph, slight crosswind but the Vanquish handled it well. 12x6 works fine, still plenty of vertical but with energy usage reduced from 2000 mah to 1700 mah for a six minute flight.

I got my Vanquish 2 up and going with a Turnigy 2200 mah battery, HXT 42-60 600Kv 43A Brushless Outrunner M(35 engine, D-MG16 Metal Gear 2.9kg/.08sec/18.8g servos, and, Turnigy Super Brain 60A Brushless ESC for under $300 (not counting shipping). The little plane goes straight up with out slowing down and I'm having a ball flying it. Don't know why everyone has to spend so much money if you just take the time to shop. Check out the specs. on the gear I'm using and you'll see that It's not wimpy stuff.

Does anybody have a comment on C of G position - I've set mine as per the instructions but seem to need a lot of down elevator when inverted.

Mine is set towards the rear of the battery tray, however I have modified the firewall to accept an E-flite Power 25 motor. You sound to be still rather nose heavy, the method I like to use to determine CG is to fly the airplane on a 45* upline and roll inverted. It should fly straight for a bit and then start to gently pitch to the canopy.

How much expo are you running on down elevator? If you have large amounts of expo it will take large stick movements to get it to fly inverted, whereas the elevator may not be moving very far. If you are running large amounts of expo on the down, remove some, or all and try it again. You might find that the plane is actually balanced fine, but it was a setup issue in the radio.

Hello,

I just finished my Vanquish MkII and got a chance to fly it over the weekend. What a sweet little plane. I am using a Hacker A30-14L, a Hyperion 4S 2500 mah pack, a Castle ICE 50 and a 11x7 prop. With that set-up I am running about 39-40 amps and 550 watts or so. I was a little surprised by this since the Hacker has a lower Kv than the recommended Torque motor (800 vs 820). The plane flies well on that set-up, but it is a little fast. I could try a 12x6 prop, but on the ground, the watt meter was indicating about 650 watts at about 46 amps or so which is a bit much for the motor.

This got me thinking that maybe I could fly on a 12x10 prop and 3S. Anyone flying this plane on 3S? I could also go up to a 13x10 as well. The reason why I am using a high pitch prop is to keep the pitch speed at 60 mph or higher.

Thanks,

Teo

Hi viva_peru, I'm flying my original Vanquish on the same motor, and I was using a 11x8e APC prop, on a 4s lipo, but I didn't like the way it flew, So I put on a Xoar 12x7 and it pulled 46A on my Watt meter. It will unlood some in the air. I have read that Hacker underrates their motors quite a bit. Using the 11x8, the motor came down just barely warm. I haven't flown the Vanquish with the Xoar 12x7 yet, but it should be ok, I'll know more after I fly it. We are entering into a low pressure weather pattern, So I don't know when I will get to fly the Vanquish again to test the new prop.

You could fly on three cells and a 13x10 prop, but you will be down on power, If you have the battery and prop, you might want to give it a try.

Hauling,

Thanks for the info. On the 11x7 which is what I used for the first test flights the plane had ample power and speed. On the second flight I flew it through the intermediate sequence and it did it reasonably well considering that I still need to get used to the plane. It was comparable to my Angel 50. The only issue I had was the speed with which the plane flew. Even on the 11x7 I think the pitch speed is in the mid 60's and with the 11x8 it would probably be in the low 70's. Considering how small the plane is that was Hauling as you would say.

For a plane of this size, the 11" prop just seems a little small so I wanted to try a 12" something. The 12x6 would work but the pitch speed seemed a little low (on the computer ~54 mph) so I though about going to a 12x10 or 13x10 on 3S. Although the power is less than on 4S, I think that the larger prop does provide more thrust. I will give it a try and see what happens. I was curious to see if anyone else had already tried it.

Thanks,

Teo

A Powerflight 32 should work ok, I checked it on the motor calc and with a APC 11 x 7e and a 4s 25c 2500mAh Lipo the pitch speed was about 60mph.
