Default power supplies

Can you guys suggest some good power supplies for running 2 chargers? I fried the first one I tried (not rated for enough watts - oops!) and have read too many reviews to know what's good or not for our purposes.

A good supply should include the ability to run two chargers each w/ 2 batteries at 5A minimum, stay cool [and hopefully not break the bank, but safety and function first].

Thanks.

Check with Hobby Lobby. They have a new line of 20 & 30 Amp power supplies. I have the 30 Amp version, has provision for two sets of banana plugs, LED meter, and USB port for those kind of devices. I'm running two TP 1010C chargers with mine.

If you don't mind doing a little soldering, these Compaq PC/Server power supplies work great. 55A I think and they handle 2 Cellpro 10S chargers going full bore without even getting warm.

Best of all, they cost less than $20 each delivered. replace the 'dot' in link below with a '.' to get to the thread on the 'other' forum.

Or watch for an Iota 55 on eBay or where ever you can find them. They are pretty bullet proof.

You may find from eBay:

Iota 55 Amp is more than enough to support two CellPro 10S charger.

I definitely want something that will work off the shelf. Right now I'm renting a room 2 hours from home and my plane has to live on the dresser, no room for getting crafty. I found one from Hobby-Lobby at 30A, I just want to double check that a 13.8V 30A is enough power to run two chargers charging up to 42V and 5A each. My thought is that it's not nearly enough power. This is the one I found:

A charger running at 5amps charging a 10S pack will draw about 22 amps from the power supply. You could run 2 chargers on a 30 amp supply, just not at a 5 amp charge rate

What charger are you using?
CellPro 10S needs 12V, ~20A DC supply to charge one 10S pack at 4.5A. So the 35A power supply only good for one CellPro 10S at 4.5A charge rate.

I am running dual iCharger 1010B+ chargers, with two 5S packs wired together on each.

I had a 14V 25A power supply that seemed to let the chargers run at 5A each, but started to fry within a few minutes. Maybe two individual supplies is the way to go...

Am I correct that it is simply a matter of power in vs. power out x efficiency? If so, I assume I would need something that could happily supply 700-800W or so to be safe.

Just ordered two to replace my old HP LC3 server supply. Time to go get my soldering station out.

Just check the HobbyKing; this charger output rating is 200W. A rule of thumb, charger efficiency is ~75%, so you will need 266W power supply (estimated). The SPEC already said it will need 300W input power.... close enough.

BTW, you can roughly estimate how much current you will have:
For 10S pack, assume it is 37V at begining, the maximum current (ideally) is 200/37=5.41A
When battery pack is approaching 42V, the maximum current (ideally) will be 200/42=4.76A
So, for 10S pack, it won't give you 10A charging rate.

Joe,

I run a Iota 55 i got on line through eBay. I have the same 10s set up in my Wind as you do, My buddy and I put a voltage meter between my TP1010 and his Hyperion drawing off my Iota and we both have plenty of power to run our chargers off the same power supply. I used a sniper bid and I got a low bid and paid around $110 for it. I using TP 30C 5000mAh with the Scorpion 4035-250.

Hi

See the source "CORSAIR TX 850W SLI SINGLE RAIL", one rail 12v with 70A (840W) ~$130
http://www.corsair.com/products/tx/default.aspx

Many protections: Over Current/Voltage/Power Protection, Under Voltage Protection, and Short Circuit Protection provide maximum safety to your critical system components.

840W/42v = 20A
42v*5A = 210W

840W/210W = 4 Chargers @ 5A

With this power, you can have 4 chargers 10s 5A

I think that is the best option, for the price of $130

Best regards

The Iota looks like a winner though it will take a couple weeks for funds. Does it require anything, or just plug my chargers right in? Hard to tell from the pics...

Go with the Iota 75, can handle 2 chargers, without a problem at all, the 55 is good also, that what I use.
Go to ebay, the 75 is $25 dollars more, but you need to change, the power cord.It a CPU plug

Joe you'll need some power outlet. Take a look at Chris Moon wdb site http://www.electric-f3a.com/index.htm. If you sreach on the site he has pictures of set up.

This is the "standard" charger box in my flying site that made by Kevin. There are at least three more copies in our club. Powered by an Iota 55.

You can find those at Frys Electronics, Best Buy, etc... they are a CD box. I've got one except mine is bigger and has wheels and a handle (ala the rollaway luggage type).

I use the 350W 12v 29A power supply for my 10s charger. It can be obtained brand new from e bay ([link=http://cgi.ebay.com/350W-12V-29A-Switching-Power-Supply-CCTV-DVR-Security-/190411190756?cmd=ViewItem&pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2c556431e4#ht_2203wt_1018]this url[/link]) with a reasonable price (I paid $30 including shipping). It is light in weight, compact, very good DC specs, and enough power with reserve for one 10s.

I did some mod to the unit for extra safety. By design (bad), the AC power is supplied through post N and L that can partially exposed through the gap between the plastic lid and the unit base. I opened the unit up, cut off the two printed lines on the PCB that are for AC and drilled two 1/32 holes on top of the printed lines. AC power wires pass through the two holes and soldered on to the printed lines. A larger hole is drilled on the side of the unit for AC cord.

One can add one such power supply for each additional 10s.

One question on charging power packs for motors. When do you charge each pack to full before driving to field, on the same day or a couple of days in advance?

Here's my version of a charge box with a 40amp PSU and 2 x Cell Pro chargers. Love the way it all fits into one box that you can close and take to the field!
I tried to modify a computer PSU but managed to blow it up - oops! So here's attempt no 2.
Unfortunately the pictures don't show their file names which makes it easier to understand but I think that it should make sense.

One question on charging power packs for motors. When do you charge each pack to full before driving to field, on the same day or a couple of days in advance?
With my iCharger there is a "storage" charge program which charges to 3,85V per cell. So after flying I charge all my packs to 38,5VDC. Then night before flying I charge them fully. Due to the fact that actually the packs are already partially charged, remaining charging time is less which is practical. My packs are now over 100 charge cycles without apparent reduction in functionality so I guess this works fine. I fly Rhino 4900s.

Before I had smaller packs for another plane (4S) which I always had fully charged (so I could grab the plane when I wanted to fly without having to worry about charging). These packs detoriated very quickly, after about 20 cycles they were gone.

I've been running a 45 amp MFJ power supply with a little 5 outlet West Mountain RigRunner for several years now and I've been very happy with it.
