Default Castle Creations HV80 ESC

Hi All,

I am using a Castle Creations HV80 turning a Hacker A50-16L motor, 18 x 10 prop pulling about 60Amps.

If i advance the throttle quickly after being on idle for a while I get a sync loss, clunk sound from the motor.

I am using 24Khz PWM and normal timing with a 3.2 firmware.

Any ideas? High / Low timing a different PWM?

thanks

I had some similar issues and called CC. They said to use a lower PWM for my motor, and had me change a few other settings. You should call them with your specific setup for settings.

One thing I would absolutely do in the interim is turn off the data logging and see if it helps. Seems to be some timing bugs not sorted out yet.

Use either "outrunner" pwm or the lowest fixed value and "low" timing for big outrunners.

The logging can be turned off too but I have only seen that give a slight knocking sound at full power instead of a loss of sync during acceleration but I can't hurt to turn it off and try.

Also make sure you are using good connectors between the motor and esc. The esc needs to clearly "see" the motor and bad connections can lead to loss of sync. Some of the real cheapie bullets are more like "gold tone" than "gold plated".

I tried it in outrunner mode and it was worse. I was using medium timing but i will try low timing and 8KHz PWM.

I am using 4mm bullet connectors between the ESC and motor.

I have now tried low timing with the 8Khz PWM. It did not eliminate the problem completely but it did reduce the problem and it did reduce the peak current.

I will try next with the logging turned off and see if there is a difference.

OK I have now tried with logging off and the knocking sound seems to be gone. The sync loss sound on acceleration also seems to be gone.

Has anyone else had this experience?

Bumping this thread...

I'm running the new ICE HV2 80, Hacker A50-14L and 18x10e APC. I can't get rid of the hickup at startup, unless I fly with an idle RPM. But I like the plane better with braking, so need to fix this.

Settings:
Throttle Response: Medium (5) - fixed endpoints.
Motor Start Power: Medium (59)
Motor Timing: Low (0) - I did try timing on Normal, it was worse at first, but now the same.
PWM Rate: 8khz

I emailed Castle a few days ago but heard nothing. Today I flew and heard a HORRIBLE screech, which is when I landed and decided to just fly with an idle RPM.

Joe,
When I had this problem with a CC and Pletty outrunner, the good advice from the experts was to not use brake % greater than 30%.
Haven't had a problem at 30%.

Hi Joe,

What firmware?

Did you try outrunner mode?

What brake %?

I think it was on 3.71 or something at first. They updated the firmware to 4.01 beta or something - whatever it is, it's the newest firmware as of 3/30/12.

I was running 50-60% brake. It's not really enough, the prop spools up pretty good and stops after the plane has stopped moving, and braking performance is basically non-existent.

I have not yet tried Ourtunner mode, that's next. I've been told not to use this several times over the past few years, but maybe with the new controller it's time to give it a shot (feeling like the guy who called tech support before rebooting Windows

I plugged in a different motor, and the ESC had a hard time starting it, just kind of oscillated around neutral, until I jiggled the throttle a bit.)
