Pattern Practice plane - Trunk plane

I'm sure this has been cover many times in this forum somewhere. But I would like to hear some suggestions.
I started shopping for a winter pattern practice plane. I am looking for something that I can just keep in my vehicle through the winter. So far I have looked at the EPO birds the Sunrise, and the Rainbow. My first aileron plane was the Formosa II... not a bad flyer for what it was and it didn't seem to be affect by any temperature changes. As far as balsa built ups the Electrifly Sequence and the Osiris but I don't think they will hold up to temperature abuse. I saw the Sequence fly the first time at St. Clairsville and I was really impressed with that little bird. Do you guys have any suggestions? What do you think?

Depending on how small you want to go I'd suggest looking at the 3D Hobby Shop Osiris, designed by Andrew Jesky (who apparently is a pretty fair pilot ;) ). They make a 47" verson and a 62" version. A full 2M version is on the way as well.

I have the 62" version and it flies really well. You can set it up for 5S or 6S power and it is one great little airplane. Worth a look.

I have the Wings Maker's Sunrise, it's a very fun plane to fly, but it's on the small side. You may want to consider the World Models' - Wings Maker's parent company - Super Taiji EP. It's an all wood 40 size pattern plane, capable of flying the Sportsman & Intermediate sequence.

They will also be offering the Taiji in foam version, shipment should arrived in three weeks. I have been flying their EPP prototype for the past three months & am looking forward to receiving the EPO version soon.

This plane has a full compliment of 4 sizes from a 400 size up to a full 2 meter. Pictured is the 70 sized version.

You guys need to remember the Extreme Flight Vanquish II. I've had mine for 3 years now and still in love.;)

I didn't realize there was a 47" Osiris. Hummm.. How do you think a built up airframe will do in a vehicle through a Cleveland winter? Especially a finely tuned airframe like the AJ Osiris. The Vanqwish has been out of stock for a long time like many of their other planes.

No idea. I have no clue what "Winter" is. I was raised in Arizona (Scottsdale) and live in southern California now. [&:]

I have seen this fly in some moderately high winds and it was surprisingly stable.

It would have to be airfoiled. So far after hours searching the only ones I am finding are the Rainbow and the Sunrise. I think they are the only two planes out there in a modern foam F3A plane unless I am missing one. Besides the Formosa II. And theres the Techone Venus but that one is far too light. I'll take a 52" mini Spark blown in EPO thanks. Will keep looking.

Patrick, one other model that I have flown might meet your criteria.

While not a Pattern plane per se, the [link=http://www.horizonhobby.com/products/carbon-z-yak-54-pnp-EFL10075]E-flite carbon z Yak 54[/link] is a very nice flying model, and with good servos and reduced throws and perhaps a mix or 2 could emulate the smaller pattern models quite well.

You know,
That part of the year when you wear a jacket and it rains. Sometimes cloudy and windy. When you don't want to go to the beach.

The Carbon Z Yak is one expensive foamie. 300.00 for the PNP and 400.00 for the BNF. I choose the wrong career for that :( If I go this route I would definitely be purchasing the parts only.

Hi,

HobbyKing Firenza F3A (looks very similar to Rainbow - probably from same manufacturer, maybe updated?):

RE: Pattern Practice plane - Trunk plane

I was just looking at the Firenza. From what I have read so far in the threads the Rainbow and the Firenza are the same airframe. What has been posted is that there is just subtle differences in hardware and trim scheme but other than that the airframe is the same. If this is not correct I would like to know. Should I go with this one the USA warehouse has it in stock for 84 dollars. This is interesting the shipping information states that the plane could be picked up locally from their warehouse in Lakewood. I had no idea... The Firenza is 49 plus 55 or so in shipping.

The Peridot is very interesting. I couldn't tell from the pictures but after translation I found it is constructed of EPO. Wing span is 24" though and it weighs under 200 grams. Which is impressive for a full fuse foamy. Its not going to be a good outdoor winter foamie. Thank you for passing that information along BEM!.

The Sputnik V4.3 is in contention now after watch the very inspiring video of the test pilot flying it. Excellent pilot and a master of the roller.
Thanks guys

Hobbyking live support confirmed that the Rainbow and Firenza is the same airplane.

I have a Hyperion EPP SNYPER XII airplane I bought from RC Dude. It flys very well and makes a pretty good pratice plane. Being EPP it will handle the trunk storagw very well. It's flying surfaces are very large, but with normal amounts of movements it does a nice job in flying the pattern, at least in Sportmans class. I belive it is available in a few sizes, mine being 44" WS. Call the RC Dude and he can hook you up with everything you need to get it in the air and flying very well.

Yes I am familiar with this plane as a 3d Plane. Somebody built one up at the Ohio Huck fest and flew it. Nice plane for 3d practice.
