10 AWG vs 14 AWG
 

Hi guys,

Just noticed today that the wires on my Zippy 5s packs are 10AWG while the battery harness I use to connect the two packs in series to make them 10s, is only 14 AWG (that's the only size they had at HobbyCity). Just wondering if that might cause a problem?

For a 2M I don't use anything less than 12ga. I particulary like the Deans wire since is very flexible.

Here's an easy way to tell. As soon as possible after landing feel the series adapter. If it feels warmer than the battery wires then it is having trouble with the amperage (that is where the heat comes from). If it is the same as the battery wires, I would not worry about it.

Temp rise is a good indicator of too light a wire gauge / connection, as Silent suggests. A foot long lenght of 14ga wire will handle about 70A @ 42v - as the load voltage will be less,  the 14ga is a little light - but a couple of inches will likely work.

I make my own adaptors for joining up packs in series as I think 14AWG is too light for 10S, very easy to do yourself. Make adaptors up in 12AWG and you will be fine in my experience just make sure the solder flows well with enough heat. All parts available from HC.
I'm curious as to what plugs you are using, HC only shows 14AWG on EC3 connectors, is that what you are using? If so can I recommend you moving up to EC5, they will carry a much heavier load.
