When i first started, i used my thumbs like a video game and a guy at the field told me "son, you gotta strart using at least 2 fingers on those stick if you're ever be good." I ignored him for a long time because it messed me up, bad. Then once i got my sim, i tried the two finger thing. It felt very very weird for about three days, but slowly i got used to it. Now when i try to go back to just thumbs, i feel like i have no precision on the sticks.
Give the multiple finger thing a try for a while, once you get used to it, you'll feel the difference, and you'll never, ever go back. I'm gonna start using a strap also.
There's a reason a great majority of the pro's fly like that i guess.

thumb+fingrs 4 me..
with thumbs i when i want to move something up.. it moves it a lilttle bit left or right but with my other finger involved its alot less..

i never flown a heli or plane so i dont really know the feel, but i thought about it and two fingers with the strap feels nice.

I use a "pinch" on the right stick, and a thumb only on the left stick! How's that for compromise? Just feels natural that way!

OF course I just hold it and use my thumbs... 
walkera didn't give me a neck strap, I wouldn't want to wear it anyhow, and for running after it I just calmly set down the Tx and take off in a mad sprint.
