    Dragonus SA Build Thread...

In condsideration for doing this build thread I received this kit from the awesome people at Flying-Hobby, free of charge... I provided all the other components except the motor... If you do not think I pay for my kits with MY time and effort you are sadly mistaken... Enjoy... Ken

The manual is looking pretty good so far, some color pics, even FUTABA and JR wiring diagrams in the front... Full pictures of the required tools for the build, a complete fastener chart... NICE... I'm a stickler when it comes to hardware...

Step one..The main rotor head assembly...

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The manual is seperated into sections according to the small bags of parts... Step one is the main rotor head assembly...

Blade Grips and some nice spacers...

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Blade grips look pretty beefy... Two 3X8X4 bearings in each grip... Another nice thing I just found in the hardware is some spacers, two for between the bearings with a portion designed to remove the endplay from between the two inner bearing races in each grip... The other two, the ones in front, I've never seen used before, they seem to be polyurethane or similar, harder than rubber o-rings, but still somewhat flexible, these go between the head dampening o-rings...

    Blade Grip assembly...

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Start by inserting one bearing into the blade grip, make sure it's fully seated... Next install the small black spacer... Finally the second bearing... Repeat this procedure for the other blade grip...

    A little o-ring tip...

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I use this tip when ever installing o-rings into a headblock or anywhere else similar to this... I use a short piece of brass tubing I got in an assortment pack from K&S Metals... All different sizes, the different sizes even "telescope" into one another assuring I'll find one that fits for any particular o-ring...

I think I first started doing this with my hornets, to install the dampening o-rings in the base of the head block...

    Finishing step one...

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I think the manual I received is actually for the metal headed version of this heli, but all parts look identical, the reason I say this is in the manual they show using some type of sleeve retainer on the bearings in the blade grips... DO NOT DO THIS WITH PLASTIC GRIPS!

    1) theres no need
    2) sleeve retainer is used in metal to metal applications
    3) sleeve retainer will destroy certain types of plastic.

The manual also shows using threadlocker on the Blade grip screws, you do want to use it here, be careful not to get any in your bearings...

    Prepare the mixer arms...

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Next I need to prepare the mixer arms for attachment to the blade grips, I need to install the balls on the mixer arms using the m2x7 flat head screws... In the manual it shows having to install the bearings too, mine were already installed... Here's a pic of the parts needed in the next step...

Notice on the mixer arms the two sets of holes for "programming" the head...

Install the mixer arms to the blade grips using the m2x10 pan head phillips screws... Pay attention to the manual, make sure the balls are installed on the correct side of the mixer arms..there are also two precision spacers which go between the mixer arms and blade grips, one on either side...

Step two in the manual is a continuation of the main rotor head assembly, in this step I need to assemble the Flybar Basemount, Flybar and Main Shaft...

If you look on the Flybar Basemount there are three holes for the "programmable" features of the head... You can just make them out in this pic...

    Prepare the parts for assembly...

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Start by installing the two machined metal inserts into the control arms...

Now is also a good time to install the link balls onto the ends of the Control Arms...

And install the set screws, but leave them loose and no threadlocker yet...

Step 2 Assembling the Flybar Basemount...
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Installing the Flybar Basemount is pretty straight-forward, slip the Flybar Basemount in the opening in the Main Rotor Housing, make sure the "programming" holes are on the same side as the blade grip arm... Put one of the spacers in place followed by a 2x5x2.5 bearing and secure in place with a m2x5 pan head screw... Here's a pic with one side done, also showing the parts required... Repeat on the other side...

Next, Install the Bearings in the Flybar Basemount...

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

One 2x5x2.5 bearing goes in each end of the Flybar Basemount, this is really slick, I guess many minis may have this but none of my micros do... The bearings should make for very smooth flybar movement...

    Install the flybar...

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Install the flybar by first slipping one end through the Control Arm/metal insert and then putting one of the small 2.1x3.5x0.5 spacers on the flybar... The spacer is what rides against the bearing race on the end of the Flybar Basemount, one on either side...

    Finishing the flybar install...

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Make certain the control arms are level to each other, make certain the flybar is centered, use a caliper to measure from the edge of the control arm to the end of the flybar, make sure it's equal on both sides, when all is good secure the two set screws in the control arms using a bit of threadlocker...

OK back to it... I forgot to do a little step in the construction earlier, I forgot to install the two balls on the Flybar Basemount... The two balls for this are packaged seperately because they use shorter screws than the other balls... No problem, I can install them easily enough now... WHEN INSTALLING THESE do not tighten the screws too tightly, it will cause binding in the flybar movement... You want your flybar to move absolutely freely... It's on bearings... hehe

The last thing to do in step two is install the main shaft, it has a 5mm OD, it's hollow with a cross hole for the jesus bolt, the Headblock is a good tight fit on the Main Shaft, it is secured with a m2x10 Pan Head Phillips Screw with a nut on the other side... I suggest you use a little threadlocker here...

    More special hardware...

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here in step three is where the two segregated screws are used, which were in the bag with the parts from step one, although this may seem like a mistake, it's logical, in that all the parts are for the rotor head, not really an issue. It is clearly shown in the manual where ALL special hardware gets placed. Additionally every fastener and bearing is identified by size in the manual at each step... NICE manual so far... It could probably use a little more text, but the drawings and nomenclature are plenty for the average builder, an experinced builder might only have to occasionally glance at the manual for reference as the build so far has gone very smoothly with only one small problem for me, one of the inner swash balls screw holes is slightly striped(easily fixed with a lil Bob Smiths Gold CA), OR AN UPGRADED METAL SWASHPLATE... hehe! I noticed while installing the balls on the inner swashplate that the holes are actually pre-threaded in the plastic... At least on the inner swash...

Also there are some other special screws in this step of the assembly with a very short threaded section on the shank... These are used for mounting the Mixing Levers to the Washout Arms... Here's my progress so far...
