We need more info to make a good recomendation.
What is your budget?
Electric or nitro?
Will you be seeking help from another pilot/club or go it alone?
Any other RC experience?

Don't even THINK about it until you have spend quite some time on a simulator. If your hobby shop doesn't have one, go to a friend's house of buy one Real Flight G3.5 is a good one. Good luck -- you'll need it.

RE: Newbie..where do I start?
Ok I know a simulator is a great idea. Electric Heli is where I want to start. If I spend some time on the sim. is it safe to go with say a Heli-max or T-Rex or would these be to advanced? Some packaged kits are chip, but will I out grow this fast and wanted bigger and better anyway?

I would highly recomend a Helimax or T-Rex if your budget allows but take it slow.
Follow the RADDs lessons and have an experienced pilot look over your bird and do a trim flight (even if you have to drive serveral hours it is well worth it)
