Recommendations for GAUI 550 CFS Build
Hi.
I have a number of 450 clones and have decided to try something larger. Today i ordered te Gaui 550 - this one http://www.wattsuprc.com.au/product_...asp?pid=204006 I have started researching threads and forums.. but would appreciate any advice.. If you have one of these or you know about them.. What are the best Servos for Cyclic? Tail? What motor / pinion combo? ESC suggestions? I have an 8FG radio and RX I am happy to go mid to high range forcomponents on this heli. Thanks in advance. |

No worries.. I am half way there.. got the Servos and the ESC today.. Hitech HS5485HB x 3 for Cyclic ($23 each) Futaba BL254 for Tail (Unbeleivably fast servo) $120 Hobbywing Platinum Pro ESC 100 Amp ($81) I am still looking for motor / pinion combinations for this heli.. I have a little experience with the Gaui line of helicopters. Sorry I missed this thread, but, I only log on here at RCU about once a week. Did you find the answers to your questions yet? The Z-Power or Tonic-X, Z-30 1100kv motor is very popular on the Hurri 550 for advanced flying. For mild sport flying the Z-20 980 kv motor is also popular.
There are many gearing options for the Hurri as it uses a 4 gear drive system. Pinions come in 13-14-15-and 16 tooth. Front gear comes in 42 -50- and 60 tooth, and one-way gear comes in 19 and 20 tooth. The main gear only comes in a 61 tooth. You can pretty much gear it for many different motors and flying styles, from mild to wild. Hope this helps.... |

Rob, My 425 came with loctite and grease in the thrust bearings.

Rob, I watched your vids and something doesn't sound right in your head set-up. In idle up mode you should have 0 pitch at mid stick and equal positive and negative pitch at high and low stick. It will be kinda difficult to flip and roll and fly inverted smoothly with +9 at the top and -7 at the bottom. Should be more like -10 at low stick, 0 at center, and +10 at high stick in idle up mode.
The servo wheel on your rudder servo looks a little small in the vid, I dunno how well the tail will hold. I have a Gaui 425, a mid-boomed 500, and a 550 and have the ball on the rudder servo out 13mm from center. Can't tell in your vid but it looks a lot less than that. Are the fly bar paddles you installed smaller than the originals? If so, cyclic response might be kinda slow since it is even a little slow with the original ones. Also, if in the future you are looking for some nice upgrades, a guy on our Gaui forum has some very nice upgrades for the Gaui 425/550. His "Easy-Mesh" motor mount is the shiz-nit. He also has new bearing mounts that accept larger bearings on the OWB shaft, as the small bearings seem to be a weak spot on this helicopter, and fail prematurely. His upgrades are under the name " HeadHunter Helicopters". |

I'm never going to be a great 3D heli pilot so i set mine up deliberately that way (at least for now) as I like it hovering with the stick just above neutral.. I will probably change the wheel on the futaba tail servo.. it definately needs more throw.. The fly bar paddles are about the same size, but a little heavier.. the guys in the hobbyshop said it would make the heli a little more stable Thanks for the info on the upgrades... Just another question.. I can't remove the blade grips due to the factory loctite but there is just a tiny amount of movement.. IE if you pull and push on the blade grips away and towards the main shaft they move a tiny amount.. like a clicking sound? It is even on both sides.. does this sound normal or should I persist in trying to remove the feathering shaft and re tightening? I am worried that I will break something as the screws seem really locked TIGHT.. |

Rob, the smaller fly bar paddles will give it less cyclic response, so, in a way it will be easier to fly, but harder to perform loops, rolls, flips etc.
As far as the blade grip bolts. If you have the CNC grips you can use a pencil type soldering iron and put some heat on the bolt to melt the loctite. Not sure how well that would work with the plastic grips though as they might get damaged from the heat. As for the grips moving slightly, you can change the pressure on the dampeners if you can get the grip bolts off. There are washers on there with a 'step' in them. One way makes for soft dampening, flipping one washer makes harder dampening, and flipping them both makes it hardest dampening. The 550 manual I have is old and doesn't explain it, but I think the newer ones do. If I can find a link to the newest manual I will add it here. Here is a link to the download page at Gaui. There is a pdf file of the latest 550 manual on the left side, second one down. It shows how to change the dampening pressure by flipping the washers on the spindle shaft bolts. Hey Rob, I just bought one of these brand new second hand, its never been flown so Ive been told. It will be my first heli and I do fly fixed wing rc so Im not a complete novice in this regard. The 550 is already built so the hard work is already done, just have to add the rx charge the bat and fly...I hope. Any tips for me starting out on this heli? Im using a JR DSX9 and 7ch rx.
