Default Hobby King 70mm F-86 and Banana Hobby Mig15

Nothing came up in a search, so I thought I'd start a thread on the Hobby King F-86 70mm. I have not received mine yet but a friend of mine has one and I shot some video. I'll post my mods and things here and others are welcome to do the same. I also ordered the Mig15 from Banana Hobby, so we will see how delivery times are.

OK, I ordered the Hobby King F-86 on the 1st and it has not shipped yet, I did however get my Mig15 from Banana Hobby after a week went by and I got on the on-line chat and asked about my order, they shipped it out next day. Not sure if you have to remind them or what, seemed kind of weird.

Anyway, I have some questions about the Mig15, so if anyone has one please help me out, I want to fly it this weekend.

CG, where is it? The instructions are not very clear and I want this thing right on the money!

I had problems with the retracts, at first they all worked but were going up and down when I hit the retract switch and would not stop until I hit the switch to lower them. At that time the left main gear disintegrated internally and stopped working. Banana Hobby said they will ship out another retract in 7 days, we will see. After playing with them for a while, all of the sudden the remaining 2 started working right.

What electric gear are a good replacement for these? Hobby King has a few sets of electric retracts, not sure if I have the room for air operated.

I touched up the paint and shot it with some Model Masters flat clear, not a great job but I think it looks great from about 10 feet away!

Flight reports, the Mig15 from Banana Hobby does not perform like it does in the Banana Hobby video, it is very slow on the stock set up. Lucky for me I have a long runway that is very smooth, it rolled a long way before lifting off with full up elevator! It will need a new fan and thrust tube to get some performance.

The F-86 flies very scale like and the performance is decent, luckily it already has a thrust tube installed and overall a much cleaner ducting than the Mig.

Everyone compliments my F-86, says it looks very realistic. For weathering I used black mixed with Model Masters aluminum and an airbrush, I went over the panel lines and some of the panels, in the air as you can see even with the bad lighting, it looks great. I also painted all of the wires and servo's aluminum.

Still flying my F-86, in fact I bought two more! My club is in the beginning of a boom of F-86's, just search "venom f-86" on ebay and you will see why. $125 shipped for one of these! I decided to spruce mine up a bit, so I made the molds for a cockpit kit, it's completely vacuum formed on just two small sheets of .015 plastic!

Also, the pilot is the Hobby King pilot, but the one you see in the pictures is a copy I made. I just could not cut the original up, so I made a silicone mold of him and cast it in resin. So yes, I did paint it myself, including the insignia on the helmet!

I'll be at the Randolph AFB air show this weekend at my clubs display if you want to see them in person or chat!

Later,

Luke

Capacity: 3200mAh

Continuous discharge rate: 30C

Burst Rate : 35C

Voltage: 14.8V

Cells : 4

Size : 135 mm x 40 mm x 30 mm

Net Weight: 370 g

That is what I'm using on the stock set up, these planes are not speed demons, but they do fly very scale. Mine was clocked at 70 mph bone stock with drop tanks on the battery above. If you wanted more, then a power system/fan swap would be no problem, sheesh, at $100 how can you lose!? At any rate, speed is not my game, I've done nothing to mine and I've been flying it for over 2 months, talk about dollar to fun ratio! As far as flight times I set mine for 6 minutes.

Is this F86 the same jet venom had for a while and then discontinued the plane?
I've found some Leopard EDF units and looking to possibly get the 70mm 3700kv version for this F86..
and I think it has 3.55lbs of thrust and 1000watts on 4s

The same company that produces the plane makes them for everybody. The difference is that each distributor selects the options they want installed. I can tell you that there is a big difference between the Hobby King version and the Venom version, the Hobby King version is superior.

All that is needed to fly the plane pretty well is about 670watts, that is about what my HK version does and I like it a lot. On my fish scale it puts out 2lbs of thrust. I'm no expert on these things, but for me it seems to come down to the ESC's, I don't know what ESC Venom is using, but my Venom F-86's are dogs. The motors and fans are the same in both planes.

Let me know how the 1000watts version flies, but I would add an extra spar in the center section! The wings have a wing tube of some kind going the length of the wing, but they are not connected at the center section.

Do you have a link for the Leopard fans?

Well good luck to you on your deployment! If your HK F-86 flies as good as mine you will have a blast with it. Looking forward to the pictures, here is my Venom F-86, still can't fly it because it has no power! Only 1lb of thrust on the stock set up![:'(]

Ok a couple questions for you bro..
One, what are the differences between the venom and HK versions..?
Two, why does the one in the pictures only have 1lb of thrust?

OK, just by looking the fan and motor in both the HK and Venom version look exactly the same and produce the same amount of thrust with the same battery and ESC.

The HK version has a Turnigy 45A ESC but I don't know what is in the Venom. I bought 2 Venom F-86's and both ESC's were bad. Others have had success but the HK F-86 is the faster of the two if the Venom F-86 works out of the box.

HK version has electric retracts and the Venom has air, my electric retracts worked great from day one. The Venom air retracts will need the valve replaced in order to hold air, otherwise I like the air retracts too.

So, I have two airframes to figure out a new fan/ESC combo, still looking around.

It would take a lot of work and you would lose the speed brakes, but I think it could be done.

Those cockpit details that you did How mch for one of those? Im looking to do the same thing, but you have it down to a science!!! Let me know!
Sorry, but currently I am only selling them to local club members, if that changes I'll let you know.

I installed a ChangeSun 70mm 10 blade fan and a Turnigy L2855-2800 EDF Outrunner (630w) with a TURNIGY Plush 80A w/ UBEC Speed Controller. Yesterday we were doing a formation take off and I was second behind a stock F-86, bad idea! Even after waiting for the other guy to get ahead of me, when I hit the throttle I was on him so fast, I had to pull up early to fly over him! All is fine though, so this new set up provides lots of power and is much quieter and jet sounding.

http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...dProduct=18543

http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...idProduct=3727

http://www.x-flight.com.hk/index.php...7a&lang=en&ev=

On a more somber note, I crashed one of my F-86's, my new bird with a completely redone paint job! I had a stock motor in a new Changesun fan just to see how it would perform, it was good but not as quiet as the Turnigy L2855. So I wanted to do a motor swap after the test flights, the test flights by the way went great. The next day when I took off the plane went crazy and I lost the battle to keep it in the air, totally destroyed! The weight difference in the motors was significant enough as I had the CG at the rear most position, so this is a lesson for me to always check the CG after any mods. Here are some pictures of "Mike's Bird" before disaster! [] (along with some other pictures from Thanksgiving day!)

Nice pics of the Toys'R'Us club..

lol! And you joined RCU to post in my thread?! I feel so special! I will identify you, are you also a member of the Toys 'R' Us club?

love to see some video of these with that new 10 blade fan...
If I can find someone that can hold a camera steady for a flight I would love to post a video, but right now I'm the only one with a video camera in our club. As you can see by the video at the beginning of this thread, I know how to shoot video! [8D]

Thanks edwinkania!
