Default My recent "HABU" innovation

Never had any real desire to own this model, but got stuck with it after a club member recently passed away. The chap built it three years ago, but sadly, never had a chance to see it fly. It was so heavy that when he attempted to, you could walk faster than it rolled along the grass strip. I remember few years back, hooking up an E-meter on it and it barely read 1200W on full stick. At over 3.5kg AUW, I told him to upgrade it or forget about it with those figures, so it was sitting on the shelf all this time. Recently spotted it at the club for sale, covered by the dust, so I got my hands on it for a song, just for the sake of top MG servos, 100a CC ESC, retracts, v/reg., 12ch/RX! and other bits. The model itself looks too generic for my liking but I thought I give it a go, pulled it apart and modified few things.
I flew it few times on 6S, no trouble taking off our grass strip, but it is much nicer to fly off the smooth beach sand and much livelier on 7cells. Currently waiting for the hotter 80mm/8S power set up. Handy little jet to carry under the arms while going for a quick splash to the beach and enjoy few flights at the same time. Extremely stable after my winglets innovation, so I’m trying to make up for my old late friend member, Warwick, J.

Flying off the beach sand is magic with this model, smooth as silk. Yesty flew it in one of my clubs with grass strip and it was so windy I was the only fool flying ending with cracked trunion on the nose gear which wasn't upgraded to alloy as the main gear. I'm fishing around to replace it to something more sturdy.

Any vids? I'd love to see them. I've got a Habu 32 as well, but with a customized paint job, I wanted colors distinct between the top and bottom. The EDF in mine is a Stu Max HET 700 - 45-1485 8s (2 x 4s 5000MaH 70C)..

I don't upload videos anymore, I have done my fair share of it for years on rcg. These days I just enjoy flying my jets where ever I can,

like today at the most challenging privat field surrounded 360 by 100' tall gums. No room for error, real tester for your flying skills,

being on toes most of the flight to make sure the model doesn't disppear behind tree canopy, love the challenge, Happy flying!

Thanks for the Compl. The C-130 h'been successfully flying last 7 years as E-power after conversion from originally build IC four stroke ('52s and '32s),

Impressive model, getting lot of compliments where ever I take it. 8.1kg model with 8.5kg thrust capable of aerobatics.

Harrier is just a A $50- foamy cheapo, totally redesigned and upgraded to one Kwatt 70mm EDF. No problem taking off from any grass strip

but I mainly fly it off the beaches at low tides. Happy flying.

As the tittle says, my recent innovation, this time to my 5+ years old twin 90mm, "Mig-15", I always love to improve my models and the latest improvement to this heavy foamy I have extended the wing tips with adding little rails for more stability. Todays footage, for your enjoyment.

After recent completion of my latest project "F-4/Phantom" with the same power set up as this "Habu32," I thought it is a good time to check the heart of the model after all these years of flying action. Pulling it out of the model is bit of an exercise and to remove the motor out from the casing was another, with bit of luck not braking the two out of 4 screws. Person who assembled this power unit over 6 years ago used the permanent locktite! I'm relieved it came out!
I'm shocked how lose is the rotor fitted on the motor shaft adapter! It can be a nightmare to balance it properly while tightening the spinner, as it can put the rotor in incorrect out of balance position, so while securing it all back it might take some time again same as with my Phantom.
Over the years I have found lot of rotors slightly compressed with the front nut and washer needing re-tightening. This one was reasonably tight but at least I can sleep in piece after the check. This time I'm going to use nut and washer to secure it instead the stock conical spinner after minor machining mod to the front of the rotor.
I have also found the rear end of the motor not fitted tight enough inside the shroud casing, so it will be packed up with some alloy tape to eliminate any play under the load in the casing.
The heat of the motor can soften up the plastic shroud firewall and create dissintigration of the fan with the slight twisting inside the casing at full power. So, here comes my good old trick, "prevention is always better than the cure". (Few pics.)

Minor mod to the impeller for using nut and washer to secure it instead the stock spinner.

Now perfect fit over the adapter and ready for balancing with the slot in the spinner.

Slight adapter build up for the perfect tight fit.

Alloy tape used to pack up the lose motor in the casing.
Few more touches to finish off my power unit before putting it back, with the piece of mind to fly it trouble free for the next 4 years.

Check for vibes free run before re-assembly insade model.

All sealed of.

Some power improvement recorded after final static thrust check, ready for more action.
Giving it a good test run after assembling it all together, before fitting it back inside of the model, quite a job to fit it in between the intake and outlet duct. Surprisingly after my minor adapter mod it run smooth with no vibes unlike the "F-4" where I had to pull it in and out and reset the rotor at least 5 times to run it vibration free.
