Default "BIG BIGGER and the BIGGEST"

“BIG BIGGER AND THE BIGGEST”
Part 1.
I thought above was the most appropriate tittle for this project I have built quite a few years back. Just logged 200th flight, I thought it’s a time to do some update review after nothing but success with this unique model, but first going little back how it all started and getting infected with this jet bug over 2 decades ago. Good old smelly days of castor, and noisy internal combustion ducted fan days are well taken over by the real thing, but these will be soon replaced by the never ending progress and improvement in EDF powered ones in my personal opinion.
Initially starting with the most inefficient 64mm EDFs, powered by brushed motors, I have gradually progressed building my own models using small 55, 64, 70 and later powerful 3-4.5Kwatt 90mm set ups. Using 3, 6 or 9mm sheets of DEPRON I have built countless number of models ranging from 3/D, airliners to fighter resembling jets. Hardly finishing one and already thinking what to build next, I got an idea why not try to build huge foamy EDF jet powered by 127mm unit. Having some experience flying this large calibre as an internal combustion and the electric conversion by Trim Aircraft in my 72” “Panther”, I started designing huge 155x250cm long delta shape foamy model based on my smaller 90mm powered one I had great success with. My main objective was to keep it light, to be able to fly it off any grass strip. Unfortunately, 6mm DEPRON sheets, 3.5 kilos of batteries and 7.5Kwatt power plant doesn’t really blend so well together so there was some challenge ahead. Laminating the sheets to triple thickness with over 30 meters of carbon fibre sandwich in between and well over 2kilos of epoxy gave me quite a stiff basic airframe strengthen even more by installing length wise the main keel, the back bone of this air ship build. Further stiffened by additional linear formers, and 45 degree supports. The “Scorpion 650”kv. powered “Ramtec” fan unit was fitted to well anchored ply base to the main frame. 500mm long thrust tube was made up with correct exit outlet for the best performance to compromise between the static and the dynamic thrust. Position of batteries was set using the Velcro as the base and heavy duty 8 gauge Y-leads made up to connect 160A, ESC. Due to the extra length of the power leads extra set of capacitors were fitted to eliminate the spikes in the voltage along the line. Being a simple delta design, elevon controls were installed and are operated by powerful metal gear servos with additional servo for the nose gear steering. Not to complicate the things I have opted for fixed landing gear I have built while using aluminium offcuts from the local supplier. Small hobby lathe comes very handy to make these and saves you lot of time and money. If you enjoy reading this, stay tuned for part 2., coming soon, Joe.

Flying EDFs in extreme heat, probably the hottest day today nearing 40 deg., sweating like a pig while all other pilots were enjoying shade inside the club house. CC160 ESC was so hot after the flight I could probably fry eggs on it so it will be interesting to download the flight data. Only few more flights to hit my 300th mission with this monster, so far all good, J.

The last flight in 103F/39C heat I have recorded the highest ESC temperature reading 165F/73C, pretty happy with this ESC going well over 200Amps on occasions.

I made it! "500th" flight with "BBB. Next target "1000" 5-7 years, if I will be still here and alive? Time will tell, Happy flying.
Few interesting statistics and facts about "BBB"
Well traveled model for the last 6 years, flown at 16 different venues and Clubs to date.
Flown distance over 3500 km.
Carried well over 1600 kg (1.6 m/ton) of lipos.
Consumed over 2.5 million mA.
Max. recorded current bursts 226 A. off 65-130 C packs.
Operational voltage 45-52 Volts.
Max. speed 155km/h. (full power)
Cruising speed 80-100km/h. (@50% power)
Take off weight 7300-7800 grams.
Full length 2460 mm.
Wing span 1520 mm.
Winning Technical Achievement Throphy at "Jets over Fraser Coast" - just a little tickle.
https://youtu.be/Sroci1m238o - accidentally deleted video so here comes "499th"

Well on the way to 600 flying sessions with this monster, today pushing through the pace some old lipos with some surging on anything over 5/8th of the stick, but who cares when it flies so great on half the power.

Lot of flying action with this model since my last post, few more flights today warming up larger 10 Amphour set of batteries, slightly heavier with more inertia to bring it down on my short 65 meter long grass strip.

Few more flights today while warming up new sets of lipos, rather windy day with 90 deg. X made landing bit tricky with this delta and no rudder.

Current draw checks.

Static th. tests ranging 9.5-10.5 kg, confirmed with digital and manual scales.

12S/10 and 12 Ah high C-rate packs used for flying.

Another action day.

Grease it on.
While doing my regular ~50 flying session service I have also checked the current draw, this time with the clamp meter to confirm my ESC down load figures, using various rate batteries the current range is 205 to 230 Amps on full stick with 9.5 to 10.5 kilogram static pull, which translate to 1.3 to 1 power to weight ratio. No sign of wearing out after 650+ flying sessions.
