Thanks Realwiz,

I have wondered about this myself. I use a JR X-2610 Tx and Jeti REX MPD single conversion Rxs or top spec Hyperion Rxs on all my planes and have only the occasional glitch that is easily recoverable, but a glitch on a fast EDF seems to be a different kettle of fish.

Can I convert my existing JR set to work with 2.4GHz receivers ? If not I suppose I could buy a Spektrum Tx/Rx and use it specifically on EDFs. I have 8 other planes so if I converted all to 2.4Ghz it would bankrupt me !

David

ORIGINAL: realwiz

I've been using the Spektrum 6100 DSM2 receiver, no glitches at all. If I had the money, I'd switch all my receivers to Spektrum.

Dave,

Have you ever tried a Berg receiver from Castle Creations? I have used either the Berg 4 or the 7 channel on my last 5 planes and I love em. I even put a 7ch Berg on my TREX 450. I have had no glitches on any of them yet. And they weigh almost nothing!

cfv,

No, I don't know if they are available in the UK. The Jeti MPD (micropulse decoding ) receivers are supposed to have reduced glitching but obviously failed my test !

I am tempted to go the 2.4GHz route and start with the Illusion.

What sold me on the spektrum was that the 2.4Ghz range is outside the range of interference caused by metal to metal rubbing. I have a Berg 5 on a small electric wing with a Feigo brushless, it will occassionaly glitch, which is pretty hairy at 75 mph. So far no crash, but I think I'm down to 3 out of 9 lives.

Really if we all step back for a a sec., , The Illusion is just that. It's truly not an EDF, if anyone knows better. Its really a pusher with a fan unit. No ducting, so precise calculated intake, or internal ducting operating pressure with a thrust nozzle. Yup, its a pusher. Thats really why it fly's slower, lack of de(@%& to create THRUST. Hmmm should be called EF.

The motor in my EF (formerly known as EDF) fried. It started to make a funny noise in flight, then siezed. I had to make a dead stick landing, upon inspection it smelled like burning electronics and I wasn't able to turn the fan blades with my finger. I called Kyosho and after being questioned on what type of battery I was using (3s 1320mah), they told me to send it in for Warranty replacement.
I wonder if now is the time to put in the Wemo fan with the little screamers motor.

I've got a buddy flying an Illusion with a little screamer/wemo combo on a 4s TP 1320. It's just that. A little screamer. From what I saw of him flying it, the extra weight dosen't seem to affect it very much, just dosen't seem to slow quite as much for landing.

I had a Berg 4ch receiver in mine, and never had a single glitch.

I've just finished repairing the damage to the fibreglas fuselage and sanding/re-spraying with acrylic paints (impossible to find an exact match for the red colour !) after my second glitch-induced crash. I shelled out for a Futaba 2.4GHz FASST radio set last weekend and will fit the Rx tonight. It's nice and light.

I will see how she flies on Saturday - Hopefully no more glitching !

It has not really stopped raining here in the south of England since mid-May and the country is flooded. Worst summer in 200 years.

Dave,

Did you ever get a chance to weigh the plane for me? Without battery hopefully.

Thanks, Charles

Charles,

The weight of my Illusion minus Lipo is 11 3/4 ozs or 335g. The fibreglass repairs etc have added a few grammes !

I use 900mAh 11.1V 20C Lipos which weigh about 70g.

How do these figures compare with yours ?

I haven't seen the specs, but the mirage looks to have a slightly larger wing area.. The Illusion looks like a cleaner fuse and air flow, especially in front of the EF.

Well I just ordered one of these slick little edf's. It will be my first edf (that I will fly). I own a JHI A-7 Corsair II but have yet to build it up the rest of the way. I would like to try something cheaper first and this one caught my eye a while back so I did some research and bought one. Thanks for all the info so far fella's. Kevin

So is the 1320 everyone's favorite battery for this jet? I read what was said so far and wanted to check and see what you's may have found since.

Does anyone know how many amps the stock motor pulls? It says it needs a min. of a 25a esc but only a 800mah battery......weird. Even a 25C battery and they are not cheap can only put out 20a's at once. Can anyone help?

Hi, the best battery is the 3s 910 thunder power..it keeps the weight down and gives good run time.. the motors pull about 12 amps wot..I have heard some guys say 16 amps but I only got 11.7 amps on mine..you can run a 1320 but the weight is going to make it harder to hand launch..

Well I ordered a 910 to use for this one.

I am not sure how most of you's said this one went together so fast. I had a bugger of a time with it. I have built approx. 20 arf's and this one was the worst one yet as far as time v/work done is concerned. I did not enjoy building it too much. I ended up dumping the whole bottle of thin ca all over my left hand. Once I reallized it happened .....like a jackass I tried catching the drips from my left hand with my right hand......DUH! Well to make a long story short I ended up gluing both of my hands to the ca bottle.......#$%^&* So there I was alone with no hands available to help.......so I knocked the debonder off the shelf with my nose and used my mouth to pick it up and squirt it all over the friggin room....even got some on my hands......looked like scooby doo on inhalants. Well I got enough on my hands to free one of them and thats a wrap......grrrr. I sure hope this darn thing flies better than it goes together. Kevin

Well - did my maiden flight today and it didn't go so well.....

Tried launching it several times and it just wouldn't get up to speed. Finally crashed harder than I would have liked and cracked the fuse in the front. Repairable, but disconcerning.

Here is my problem, with results on the wattmeter. Can anyone tell me what might be wrong?

As I move the throttle up, it peaks at about 70% throttle, and then I can hear an rpm decline up to 100%. I put it on the wattmeter, and here were the results:

60% Throttle:

6.27amps
71.2watts
11.37volts
------------

70% Throttle

6.79amps
76.2watts
11.17volts
------------

90% throttle

6.03amps
70.3watts
11.65volts
-----------

100% throttle

5.14amps
60.6watts
11.8volts
-------------

So my two questions are...

1. What is causing the drop in power at full throttle? I tried a different ESC and different battery, so I can only assume that there is something wrong with the motor or connection between the motor and ESC.

2. What amps & watts is everyone else pulling? Even at the highest power range, at 70% throttle, it is only pulling 6.79 amps and 76.2 watts. This seems kind of low to me, and I recall someone earlier in this thread saying that they were pulling about 11amps and 100 watts.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, since this is really bumming me out.

Thanks in advance!!!

Nitroaddict, what kind of battery/speed controller are you running? Dosen't sound like you are overamping your battery. You might have gotten a bum motor or fan unit.

IMHO, that's one of the easiest to launch EDFs I"m come across yet. I used to self launch it. Are you sure of your launching technique? Nice, level toss, not nose high?

I figured it out - my TX was on a heli program with throttle curve. Switched and now I am pulling 12amps and 135watts. Re-maiden on Thursday.
