Default Turbo Bee ?

I am building a Clancy Aviation Turbo Bee. The plans just say "use a speed 400 on ten cells or try something else"??? What do I do with that; so I bought a MEGA 16/15/4, Castle Creations Phoenix 25 and FMA 3s1p 2100mah LiPo batteries

The electric setup gave the following RPM numbers

APC 7x5 cut down to 4.125" --- 20,000 RPM @ 17.5 amps --- 17.2 oz of thrust

APC 8x6E cut down to 4.125" --- 17,500 RPM (very wide blades) @ 27 amps --- 18.4 oz of thrust

Grish 6x4 three blade cut down to 4.125" --- 17,900 RPM @ 14.9 amps --- 17.6 oz of thrust

MAS 8x5E cut down to 4.125" --- 20,000 RPM @ 19.9 amps --- 19.4 oz of thrust

I plan to use the cut down MAS 8x5E as it moves a lot of air and the current draw does not exceed the current ratings of the motor and speed controller

Where did you mount the motor fore and aft wise?

For efficiency purposes, with the ducted fans anyway, the distance from the tail pipe to the fan is most important. For this plane it may not matter as much though. I have a turbo bee as well and will be interested as to how yours performs. I think motor location should be determined by getting the balance correct. Since this is not a true ducted fan.

Please let me know where your motor is located. The back edge of mine will be 4" from the front of the tube.

What motor propeller combo did you use?

What RPM does it turn?

What is the all up weight?

How does it fly?

Sorry but mine is still in the box. I think your motor choice is fine. Where I would start is with the prop that you would run on that motor anyway and cut it to fit. I do not like the idea of cutting down a large prop to make a small one. The inner portion of the prop is not as efficient so you would be better off with the 6"-7" diameter that you would use and cut it to fit. Remember the Turbo Bee is an old kit. Brushless motors and LiPos were not readily available then.

The motor is now installed (what a struggle) and with MEGA 16/15/4, Castle Creations Phoenix 25 and FMA 3s1p and a MAS 8x5E prop cut down to 4.1" it pulls 23.2 Amps at 11 Volts. The thrust feels terrific.

Man, I hope you can get some video of this and update the post! That should be a blast. I have a .40 size 'Big Bee'-covered in Pink and blue, of course. Just about my favorite plane to fly. Gets a smile everywhere.

Been in one for several months! Go to the shop, thermo reads 100+, turn on fan, exit, go to air conditioned house, say: I'll be back.

I managed to get in a short maiden flight after work this evening and I am very happy with the results. I want to try a longer flight tomorrow morning before I have to go to work.

The second flight was 9.5 minutes with 15% left in the pack. I made no attempt to conserv power with lots of full throttle straight up climbs.

Kind of forgot about this thread. Not many people seem to have completed these. I still have mine in the box, but maybe I will have get started on it. Nice job. Looks good. I think it has to perform better than it would have with the original heavy motor systems available when this kit came out.

Funny you should post this morning as I took my Turbo Bee out for a spin this frosty morning. It's getting better and better I fine tune the trim and CG. (I've been tweeking a tiny bit at a time). My setup may not be the best but I am VERY happy with the performance. I must comment that the 2100mah FMA Revolution LiPo packs that I am using are great; I measured 11V at a 23amp load!!!
