JBC Reviews - Flight tests, Unboxing, builders tips, Reviews

Heya guys, I thought I'd start a thread here where I'll post reviews, videos and tips etc on various prop planes, products and modifications that I've had the pleasure to come across. Instead of starting individual threads for each different plane or product I talk about, I thought I'd keep it in one place that way it'll hopefully make it a little easier to check back and find information instead of looking around trying to find it. I'm not sure how keeping it all in one thread is going to work out (might end up being crap arrrghhh ) but I guees I'll find out . I will keep this one as prop planes and have a separate one for prop planes over in the Foamies! - RC Electric Foam Aircraft section. I'll post new videos and reviews regulary so check back now and again to see what's new. Feel free to shoot me any questions about any planes or videos etc and I'll do my best to try answer.

Have decided to kick it off with the awesome F5e Tiger II by Starmax, a very VERY nice Jet http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/js/f...eeth_smile.gif in the video I also show how to install and retro fit electric retracts using the struts that came with the model. The principle can be used on other jets if you wanted to.

The F5e Tiger II 70mm EDF from Starmax is another jet to keep an eye out for. It does everything you'd expect from a Jet in the 70mm range. It goes together nicely, the build is relatively straightforward and there's good provisions for modifications and upgrades for those that are handy.

THE GOOD : http://static.rcgroups.com/forums/im...es/biggrin.gif
- Looks SEXY
- Desert Camo scheme is great for orientation
- Good provisions for retract installation
- Flies very stable and control surfaces are responsive
- Very low stall speed and can slow to a crawl
- Comes in 3 schemes Desert, Grey and Swiss airforce
- Paint work is good

THE BAD : http://static.rcgroups.com/forums/im...lies/frown.gif
- Foam is soft and crappy Starmax EPS which will damage to even the slightest knock
- Battery bay is a little small for an EDF this size 1312mm long and only just fits upto a 4S 2200
- No covers included to conceal wiring and secure ESC to fuselage
- Short flight times for higher power setups due to limited size battery being able to fit in battery bay

I used this SAPAC/Global Fly motor and fan combo available from HiModel and on bench testing I got 883Watts at 62Amps with a 2200 30C 4S battery. This gave me more than enough power however the small battery bay and battery only allows for short 3-4min flights.

The retracts can be found here at Hobbyking which are also the same as the ones I used here from PW-RC as I wanted the included struts Phillip provides to have as spares. They hold up well and are great for this application.

Overall this is a very nice 70mm EDF Starmax have produced http://static.rcgroups.com/forums/im...lies/smile.gif It was a pleasure to build, maiden gave no surprises and once trimmed out was an absolute pleasure to fly and looked simply stunning in the air. My only gripe really with this plane is the quality of the foam, Starmax really need to look at this as the EPS even compared with other EPS models, it really is on par with the cheapest beer cooler foam out there. Once you get past this you're left with a fantastic looking and flying jet that should bring you many hours of pleasure and have the peanut gallery watching with awe. Want something a little different than the traditional F16 and F18 then definitely check the 70mm F5e! http://static.rcgroups.com/forums/im...lies/smile.gif

Hey JBC,

It's Russ (RGS2010) from RCGroups.com.

Nice review! I just pass by anything with EPS foam these days, not worth it IMHO.

Look forward to next review.

Thanks Russ,

I tend to agree with the EPS thing...sorta... well ya see I got the F5e at a really good price and because my Starmax F18 flew so nice plus the feedback on this model was so good I thought why not take a chance. The look, the size etc plus the fact I was drinking at the time I saw it online :D prompted me to buy it! hey it's how I got my FMS P47 lol, alcohol and web surfing shouldn't be mixed if you ever wanna save money ;) The only down side is that you really gotta pay attention during transport and any serious crash well...kiss the model goodbye. I do try and get EPO where possible but occasionally certain models or bargains pop up and they're only available in EPS so I might grab it, perfect example is Ming at Windrider currently has a sale on his awesome F35 70mm for $35 [X(] if I didn't already have a 70mm F35 I'd be all over it regardless that it's EPS, his models are great!

John,

Very good review on the Starmax F5-E EDF 70mm Jet!

I got mine on sale 2 1/2 years ago from Hobby-Lobby.

Here are a few pictures of mine and note that I maintained it stock to get at least 5-minute flight duration using those 4-Cell, 2200mAH, 25C, Li-POLYs.

Hey guys, I finally got to finishing my FlyFly F-86 Sabre and apart from a few wing issues the build went relatively smoothly. MAAAAAAAAAN is this a nice flying plane :) I included some helpful builders tips in it which you can use on any EDF build and I also experimented with synchronizing on-board camera with some ground camera, I hope you enjoy [8D]

Here's my review of a pretty cool F-15 made from EPO and sporting a 70mm fan, not too bad for a cheapy really and it was surprising how nice it flew :)

Purchased this model on a bit of a whim and it's made by a company I had never heard of before called NiceSky. All I can say is that I'm SO GLAD I DID :) this is the best EDF I built and flown  honestly it's that good! No I'm not getting the model for free or sponsored (I wish  ) this is just simply and VERY well designed EDF and if more were made like this the world would be a better place ;) :D

The first 3 1/2 mins of part 2 should help get the EDF juices flowing ;)
