Hello friends!
just finisch the test of the new Valkyrie Jet edf 90mm by Tafthobby (of which I hope will be soon published the review in this website) and I'm ready to start the new interesting test: the QUANTUM JET always from TaftHobby!!!
These is a good reply of big Quantum Jet from Tomahwak, turbine biplane that Taft shortly present on the market.
A nice biplane in EPO material with original Tomahwak scheme color.
Wingspan: Up 1267mm / 49.9 in, Down 1109mm / 43.7 in; wing area: Up 25D㎡， Down 21.6 D㎡; Lenght: 1389mm / 54.7 in. Ducted Fan: 90mm/11 blades
Motor: BL3541 KV1450. ESC: 80A with 8A UBEC. Servos: 9pcs 9gDigital & Metal Gear. Battery: 22.2V 5000mah 6-cell 30C Li-po. Landing gear: Retractable Metal landing gear. Flying Weight: 3100g / 109.3oz. Raido system required 6ch.

The Quantum Jet is part of the 3 new jet from TaftHobby that make their appearance on the market at the beginning of 2015 (in addition to the Quantum, there is a Valkyrie, which was the subject of my last review, and the Scorpion, which should be available soon). Also this Quantum is commercialized in PNP version, (Plug&Play or ready to fly), and only needs the connection to the receiver and batterier (6S) to be flying.

Opening the box you find the fuselage with canopy and semi-reproducing copkit, the two wings (Up & Down), the tailplane in one piece and the rudder, in addition to the two wing supports which connect the lower the top wings. To mount the Quantum takes 15 minutes and you do not need to use glue. All parts are locked in place with the screws provided in the kit. The assemblu started fixing the quote after passing the servo pins in the fuselage and block into place. It then proceeds with the fixing the rudder and then switch to fixing two wings: before the bottom wing with use the plastic support wings (attention that have a side up and side down...) and the upper one that locks in the fuselage with two screws. All already assembled I'ts solid and secure.

After to make the pins servo connections of the wings: the down wing have a multicontact that must be insertedw in the appropriate green plate in the fuselage (as shown) and one servo female pin that you simply connected to the male pin who find in the upper wing: the servo aileron used a single channel and are "replicated" with the connectors, such as those of wheel and direction: this will enable to you to allow a 6 channels Rx; if you wish to use separate channels for the upper and down alieron will need to modify the wiring of the leads (among other very simple thing but to be made before assembly of the wings). I kept everything real as kit for testing.

The weirdest thing I have seen! Bi-plane jet? If someone gave it to me as a present, the first thing I put on it is a prop in the nose!

the original Jet Plane is made in Tomhawak that have in catalog the turbine Jet 2M (http://tomahawk-design.com/produkte/...delle/quantum/). TaftHobby have made these Epo with official agreement of Tomhawak... These jet is very nice and original but I understand that it is a matter of taste...

The model fly well but, despite not have flaps, you must use two flight conditions, one for the flight and one for landing. This is because the model with gear down have different behaviors compared to fly with gear up with a slight tendency to pull right to be compensated with the rudder. A little reistance and tendency to find itself the horizontal position: these is cause for the biplane conformation with the wing pylons that provide surface to wind in turn. I fixing the batteries 5000Mah 35C 3 cm from the end of the base wood getting a decent centering for the first flight.

The features
Even this Quantum is marketed in PNP version, ready to fly, and only needs the connection to the receiver to be flying. It has a 'wingspan of less than 1109mm and 1267mm top of a fuselage length of 1389mm for total wing area of 46.6 D㎡. The motorization is Edf 90mm to 11 blades that equips both the Viper that the Valkyrie and that combined with a brushless motor Motor: BL3541 KV1450 provides lipo 6 with a thrust more than enough for a good flight. The controller is installed as standard with a 80ampere and separate UBEC 8A which supplies both Rx and gear. The servos are installed is 9 in total all 9 grams digital with metal gears; complete kit electric gear retract very good with metal legs always sprung metal and sequencer to the front door.

The assembly

It starts from the helm horizontally after passing the cable pins of the moving parts in the fuselage locks into place. It then proceeds with the vertical and then move to the wings: before the dow wing and ixed the pilon plastic wings (attention beocouse the fixing wing pylons have a precise sense of attachmentthat and you need to check that the holr correspond to the length of the pilon base up and down); after you can fixed the up wing and locks in the fuselage with two screws. All this assembled are safe for flying.

The lower wings have a link multicontact which is inserted in the appropriate green base in the fuselage (as shown) and in the servo plug female you simply attach the spinet male who find in the up wing: the servo ailerons are connec a single channel and are "replicated" in the green based in fusoage; the sae solution is apply for front wheel and rudder: this will enable if you use a 6 channelsRx; if you wish to use separate channels for the up and down aileron will need to modify the wiring of the leads (very simple but you must d it before assembly the two wings). I've left everything as standard.

The flight test
After waiting a "window" useful in bad weather in January, finally a sunny day (but with wind) for testing the singular edf biplane Tafthobby. The batteries installed are the Nano-Tech 6S 5000Mah 35C with some discarge. After verification the center of gravity (which I held as indicated by the instructions supplied by TaftHobby) I moved about 3 cm behind the battery pack from the front end of the wood base where are fixed.The take off of the model is the same of the Viper and Valkyrie, and after about 40 meters of asphalt strip giving progressively engine not to cause a rotation axis yaw. The engine gives good and no problem to take off. Once airborne with gear down the model tends to slide to the right, moviment that not is present with the gear retracted. Slightly beaten yet need to trim with some "beep" of ailerons and rudder, then gear up (I had prepared two flight conditions in the knowledge that their gear down and opened the front door could trigger different behaviors that with gear up). After centered the model in the two flight conditions I can do testing fly and I must say that the Quantum is defended very well; even if the dynamic forces caused by the two wings and the pylons wings cause a movement "auto level", tendency to level the wings. It's sufficient a few rounds to "take steps" and have good flying.
The landing does not require special care: It's sufficient take practice with some step slow but the stalemate is predictable and the greater wing area allows sufficient control.

Totally agree about the weirdness - and I love it!

I suppose this is one more design that goes for the "F3A" pattern aerobatic style. In Pattern, biplanes have been "in", during the last few years. So, somebody making a biplane aerobatic jet was pretty inevitable.

It 'true that the extreme aerobatics of this model is different from the single wing, but it is also true that it is funny fun.

Does anyone have video of how this one really does?

I like it...had the same idea myself to edf a pattern plane for smooth aerobatics and something different.this has my attention.thank you for the review.

The price is around 400 US Dollar

The Quantum can not be said that there is no note both in ground and in air because is original for the lines (reply of the "big brother" Tomhawak turbine (questionable and obviously susceptible of pleasure or not), one model that stands out and attract attention. The components installed (edf, motor, esc, retracts) is the same used in other models Tafthobby; the gear retracts work precise, edf with good power and absorption is average of edf 90mm; with a good engine management permit to fly for about 5 minutes (but much depends the state and the quality of the batteries).
My opinion is positive and applaud Tafthobby that with his last jet (the Valkyrie before, the Quantum now and the Scorpion is coming) is distinguished from other companies for the courage to experiment and to market innovative products that undergo it new and increasingly severe judgments of end users,we insatiable modelers!!!

Yesterday I was able to make two news flights even though the weather was not so good. The Quantum is fun in flight. I could put in evidence the gear retract with a no perfect landing and the perform of these is very well. I'm wait a good day (and cameramen) to make a new video.:p

what is the purpose of biplane jet ? extra drag ? slow flyer? park flyer ?

It is quite OK, don't worry about it.
There are so many things in the world that you don't have to understand all of them.

I have great difficulties understanding it when big guys run around in shorts, bouncing a ball. Another one that I don't get is when people go in manicured meadows and try to hit a ball with a club.
