Building my first Mugi
I've pretty much destroyed my first trainer. Getting tired of patching it up from too many noseplants. Gonna transfer all the goods into a Mugi. I figure at least with the Mugi, the motor and prop are protected, and it's much lighter and better looking than my trashed park flier.anyways.....
Question is, my ESC is toast and I have no idea what to replace it with. The motor is a 400 speed RS380PH. Batt. is NI-MH 8.4v 900 mAh.

constant, with a pusher set up you dont have the prop wash of air flowing over the esc to assist in cooling so an esc with a slightly
higher amp rating will not get as hot since you are not working it at its limits, 15 amp should be fine.

Good timing, I am on my way to buy one. Let you know how it performs!
OK, after all that, I wound up walking out of the store with a 30 amp Jeti. Buddy told me 18 Amp was absolute minimum, but 25 - 30 would give better power and run cooler, too. At least that's what I understood. Swiss German's a tough language!
Anyone think I'm gonna blow something up, or is it just gonna suck the batts dry in no time?

well I'm no expert... but as I see it the ESC is just a slider switch, that is carrying current,... and you just got one oversized for the draw or load,... and that should avoid burning it at least.
The worst case scenario I see is if the motor somehow gets overloaded.... and tries to draw more amps, you have the gate to let them thru,.... which could overdrive the motor, or the batteries ...which could then burn either or both....sorta like a short to ground with no GFI.
...but I think risk is in overloading the motor,... with too big a prop, or by stuffing the motor, and not killing power .....
But this is all electrical conjecture... so let the pros set you straight...whats the word guys???

You will not hurt the speed 400 motor with a 30 amp ESC. the 30 amp number is a rating for the maximum current that the ESC can pass before it goes into overcurrent mode to protect itself. The better ESCs let you program the overcurrent response. Check out the mfgr support site or tech staff. The amount of current that you actually will flow depends mostly upon the motor specs, the prop selected, and the battery's ability to deliver voltage under load.
For that combo I would say have at it and don't worry about the ESC, it will be just fine. As for the prop on a speed 400 maybe an apc 6-3 or 5-4 should motivate the mugi just fine.
Another motor possibility is the reverse wound and timed 400 motor used in zagis from trick rc. They cost about $10us and afford more power and fun at a very reasonable fee.
Now how much fun do you really want? For serious upgrades check out the inrunner brushless motors from Model Motors or Mega motors. These will make the mugi rip through the sky but are somewhat dollar intensive and need a brushless ESC.

You may have it backwards, usually a gear box is used to spin a big prop slow.
If you are going to run the 480, go direct drive, set up like the Stryker. Should scoot the Mugi along quite well.

GG, Thanks, I wasn't thinking straight I don't want to break my 480 set up apart so maybe I'll use the 580 I have, it pushes a 5 lb ABX pretty fast so 1 to 2 lbs mugi should scream
