ESC/BEC needed for a brushless motor using a NiMH pack?
Hi,
I have ordered an ARF model airplane from Tower Hobbies (Hobbico EP SuperStar) which comes with a Sp 600 can motor, ESC/BEC and a 7-cell, 8.4V, 2100mAh pack. No specs are supplied for the ESC/BEC; however, I have a new Medusa 50A, ESC/BEC which can be used with a NiCd, NiMH or LiPo pack. I want to start out with the Sp 600 can motor; but in the future, I would like to change to a brushed outrunner and continue to use the NiMH pack. I also have a new 7-cell, 8.4V, 3600 NiMH pack.
What kind of ESC/BEC must I use with a brushless motor and NiMH pack combination? Are there ESCs that can only be used with brushed motors and a second type that can only be used with brushless motors.
Thanks,
Ernie (SAILPLANE)

Yes. There are ESCs for brushed motors and ESCs for brushless motors. They are completely different, and you must use the correct type for your motor.
For your Speed 600 brushed motor, you must used a brushed ESC. Later, when you switch to a brushless motor, you will need a brushless ESC.
You will be able to use your NiMH battery pack with either type of ESC.
