Default Amp ratings on Motors and Speed controls

Can someone please explain to me how Amp raitings work together on motor and speed controllers. I have a 20Amp AXI 2212/20 brushless motor with a 18 Amp speed control. Does my speed control need to be atleast 20amps to not shut off in flight or malfunctin. OR as long as my prop size doesn't cause the motor to pull over 18 amps everthing will be ok. Just wondering now before I get started on my plane, I can exchange stuff now before its opened. Thanks for any input guys!!!!

As long as the motor current stays below the ESC's maximum rating, you should be OK. That said, there is nothing wrong with using an oversized ESC, except for the slight weight penalty of the larger ESC.

In fact many pilots prefer to use an ESC with a somewhat higher current rating than the motor, so that the ESC is never being pushed to its limits. With the ESC being such a critical component, it's not a bad idea to have a safety margin.
