Default GWS ICS-300J

Morning everyone. Quick question. Is the GWS ICS300J lipo aware?
THanks
Rick

Hi Rick -

That ESC is not lipo-aware, if by that you mean it has a LVC that is suitable for lipos. However, you can still use it with lipos if you are careful to time your flights so that you don't over-discharge the battery.

You can do this by gradually increasing your flight times and checking the battery voltage after each flight. After a few flights you'll know how long you can fly without over-discharging.

Here are the specs for that ESC
http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...SEARCH=ics300j

Here is the critical spec:

Auto Cut (V): 4.2V
          BEC: 5V/1.2A
          Current: 8A continuous/15A max
          Weight: 10g (.35oz)
          Length: 25.5mm (1")
          Width: 12.5mm (.5")
          Height: 9mm (.4")

That would be too low of a cut off for a 2 cell lipo which should be cut at no lower than 5.5 volts and preferably 6V.   As stated above, this ESC is not set-up for lipos.

This GWS 300 ESC is lipo compatible
http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXKZY7&P=7

Auto Cut (V): 5.4V & 8.1V
          BEC: 5V/1.2A

GWS seems to be using 2.7V per cell under load as their cut off voltage. This is workable but lower than most battery makers suggest you go.  If you are not going to run it to LVC all the time, these should be OK, but they do have lower cuts than other makers.  Typically 3V, under load, is the low voltage cutoff target that most battery makers suggest.

I have noticed that the GWS brushed ESC tend ot have very low LVC settings compared to other MFG.  I think they are too low, but they are workable.
