LIPO Ballancers
 

Hi!!

I'm just about to take my first plunge into LI-PO/Brushless. I've got a Seb Art Katana 30E with the included Hacker s30 motor and ESC, and have some 2200 MAH LI-POs for power.

I've seen ballancers advertised. Could someone explain exactley how they work, how I use one, and the consequences if I try and get by without one?

Could someone also recommend what type of connectors would be best for this set-up?

I would go with the Deans Ultra connectors.

Balancing: To keep everything running at the optimum performance level, and extend the life of your equipment, a balancer is a must. A balancer keeps all of the cells in the pack at an equal voltage. If you do not use one, you can have one or more cells at a higher voltage than the others, and won't perform as well. It can be a problem when charging, if one cell is higher than the others, it will peak out before the others do. If you do not have a charger yet, look at the Cellpro 4S by FMS. For $55 it charges and balances, a great little unit. I have that and the Astroflight 109. The Astroflight I really like because of the charge modes and the way it goes thru the process. It is a bit pricey, and you have to get a separate balancer like the Astroflight Blinky.

This is the info we have on our site that explains how out Blancer works which is the basic means by which they al work:
"The SBS is a termination circuit which is triggered when battery voltage rises to an excessive level. If one cell of a pack containing 2 ... 5 cells reaches a voltage of 4.3 Volts, the charge process is immediately interrupted. The series-wired cells must be connected to the SBS via a sensor cable, in order to enable the unit to measure the voltage of individual cells. Ready-made Avionics SLPB Li-Poly batteries are fitted with the appropriate connector as standard. If you already own Li-Poly batteries without the connector, they will need to be upgraded by fitting the appropriate connectors.
The SBS can also be used to discharge the pack if necessary, and to balance the level of the final discharge voltage. The unit can either be used independently (very slow discharge rate) or by connecting it to a battery charger set to discharge mode."
